My brother is coming up from La Jolla and meeting on the OC side at 3pm... Just up the 5 and get off at Jamboree. That way might be closer to Carlsbad than the 15.

The easiest way is 5 to Ortega and go east to the trailhead there are some signs that say blue jay that's the place. If you or anyone need more directions pm me

The CNF website says the roads are open. I tried calling to verify but i haven't been able to reach a human yet. For those coming from the OC side we can check the gate status at the Silverado ranger station which will at least save us from driving all the way up the canyon if it's closed. The CNF number is 951-736-1811 for handy reference.

Guys, they only close the gates when there's high fire danger, or measurable amounts of rain. I've gotten to the trailhead while it's raining and it's been open. You won't be able to reach a ranger station on the weekend- as there's nobody there to answer the phone. The website is generally inaccurate and updated a couple times a month. We're not driving all the way to Moab, just Maple Springs.
