Rode in a 4th Gen on the way to the Baltimore Auto Show today, and it made me LOVE my 5th Gen even more! :lmao:
Just kiddin! To each his own- the 4th Gen's are nice too!

I sat in one yesterday at the dealership out here that does my maintenance (3rd set of calipers on the '03, dont wanna talk about it) and i started it up, just to listen to the engine. Wicked "ticky"...u know, "tick tick tick tick". Thought id go away after a lil bit, as i walk around it, looked under the hood. When i got it and closed the door, it sounded hollow and tin-ish.
Long story short, i'll stick with my 2 4th gen's.

haha, funny. I personally don't care for the "boxy" type look that the 5th gen has, the new sequoia, IMO, looks better than the 5th gen 4Runner.

What i dont get is that the Lexus GX-version of the 4Runner comes with the 4.6L V8 AND full-time 4WD!!!

Only thing about the 5th gen that I thought was out of whack was the removal of the torsen center differential on most versions. Otherwise it's the same chassis and engine and suspension etc etc...
I like being able to throw into 4wd on light snow or wet roads and it doesn't harm the drivetrain..

I dunno 4th gens are kind of like the 1st gen xterras, see lots of females driving them...nothing wrong with that though, they are the "cutest" of the runners.

Yeh, this subjective issue has been debated to death. I find that alot of folks who went from a 3rd gen to a 5th absolutely love it, but 4th gen owners either hate it or just mildly warm about it. The styling is a subjective issue, the decontenting and removal of very useful specs like full time 4wheel option on all models (forcing you into a Limited if you want it) puts me off.
I have been casually watching the 4gens on the market since the 5th gen came out. Specifically Limited 4WD models 07-09. Found one this morning 2hrs away from me at Carmax, white on tan, V8 LTD, Nav, sunroof etc, 39,000miles, gosh I am struggling to look away. I love my 05, it has sentimental value - have never kept a car longer than 4yrs and could never find a reason to sell it, but how long before you wont find low mile 4th gens...
I keep dreaming about buying a newer 4th gen and doing the things I had always planned to do to the 05 - lift, grill guard, locker etc etc

I'd drive a 5th Gen with a 1VD-FTV.... At least I can dream.
I sort of hear ya here, cause I DO see a lot of women in these things in my neck of the woods. But it'll be the opposite for me, I'll keep my 4th gen but we're looking to put the wife in a 5th. I only like them in the LTD trim though. I think those SR5 wheels are absolutely fugly! The Trail Ed. look ok too.

I do not think we will ever see 5th gen with V8 and trany pulled from GX… I think those days are gone with 4th gen models…
On the other hand I would like to stay with 4Runners’ in the future and somewhere deep I am hoping for introduction of DI, possibly with 6 sp auto and adding Torsen to SR5 and TE… of course if they will change all models to look like TE that would be awesome too… I know it is a dream, but think it is somewhat reasonable one..
I believe we are getting close to mid cycle refresh (in 2013) so we may see something new..

Here's my story......I traded my 4th gen back in January 2010 for a 2010 Limited 4wd. It felt cheap. The hood vibrated non-stop. The black plastics inside are really blue and got "dyed" black....they scuff super easy. I began to get rattles inside after 6 months of pavement driving. Doors sounded like tin cans when they shut. Leather is cheaper. Carpet is thinner. Steering wheel is way too thick. Windsheild creaks. Door glass is thinner. Way too much chrome on it. No projector headlights or LED tails. No remote opening gas door. Ugly antenna on the fender. Headlight lenses started to fade even though it was garaged. Did I mention that it feels like a tin can?
I tried to love it for two years. I even lifted it with a Daystar kit and put a set of Terra Grapplers on it. It still felt cheap like a tin can. It really hit home when I bought my wife a 2012 Kia Sportage....it felt less cheap than my twice as much 4Runner. I was embarassed. So what did I do after two years and 25k miles????............
I traded it for "Mr. Perfect", a 2008 Limited 4wd v6 with 15k miles on it. I could not be happier. I do not miss the 5th gen at all, but I know I will probably buy another one someday. I just hope that Toyota realizes that the 5th gen is not as "buttoned-down" as the 4th gen and fixes it.
Oh, and yes I know I need to change my sig.

I have test driven a 5th gen on 3 occasions. You just about summed up everything that I do not alike aside from styling and road manners. The last one I test drove was an SR5, compared to my 100,000mile 4th gen Sport it wallowed into the corners, no better then my old one, I guess XReas is better than I give it credit for. Limited handled better in the corners, but wasn't as cushy in a straight line (go figure).
Ratting/shimmying hood on a $40K car, sheesh.
I see another 4th gen in my future.
Here's an indepth review I did between mine and 2 5th gens a year ago. My conclusion is still - I would like an 08 V8 LTD
