Satoshi grilles aren't just for looks or are they?

I hate to be that guy, but only one of those two grilles is a Satoshi style grille. The other one is just a very nice modified grille.
Satoshi refers to a user named Satoshi who was on Yotatech about 10 years ago. He is credited with making this *exact* mod. I doubt he was the first human ever but he was the one every named it after.
My point is that ONLY the grille with the older FJ style TOYOTA oem emblem is the Satoshi grille. The others are not. They are just cool custom grilles.
And if you want to be even more picky, neither of the two you posted have the actual OEM FJ TOYOTA badge, so neither are 100% Satoshi.

In addition to the fact I think the stock grilles look 100x better than the gutter guard grilles, I really do think there is much more engineering in the airflow of the grille than just blocked vs not blocked.

I’ll chime in.
The grille with the least amount of drag will have the best air flow. To understand how drag works, think of where the air pressure will be the highest and lowest on the grille as air passes through - at the very front of a grille crossbar (highest), and the very back of a grille crossbar (lowest). With high pressure on one side of the crossbar and low pressure on the exact opposite side, the pressure gradient (difference in pressure) puts a force on the crossbar toward the back of the car (drag).
If you change the shape of the crossbar though, you can change the pressure gradient and make it more aerodynamic and effectively increase the airflow. When the crossbar is more of a teardrop shape (stock grille) vs a cylinder (Satoshi grille), the pressure gradient decreases and so decreases the overall drag. Yes, the Satoshi grille has a larger cross-sectional area for the air, but I believe the shape of the crossbars on the stock grille allow more air to pass through.
And [MENTION=135134]pauldub[/MENTION] is spot on. Without going too deep, generally the more you can keep the air through the grille laminar (vs turbulent), the better the air flow.

Since this thread is already wayyyy OT. Beware of that dead bat. A lot of them carry rabbies. Perhaps that pic is way old and none of this applies... You could be exposed without even a noticable or deep cut. If you touched it with your bare hands I'd get it tested. Rabbies is no joke. Most leathal virus on the planet and at first sign of symptoms its too late.
