ScanGauge e vs. ScanGauge II

I was looking into getting a ScanGauge. Main purpose is to track mpg, especially with gas prices getting ready to head up over $5 this summer. I was looking at the ScanGauge II, but noticed at the site that there's a ScanGauge e out as well. Looks like the main difference in features between the two is that the ScanGauge e doesn't include the performance tools of the ScanGauge II. I guess my question is, how often do you ScanGauge II owners use all those performance tools? Are those tools worth the extra $50 in costs between the two gauges?

I'm leaning towards the ScanGauge e right now, mostly because I'm just concerned about mpg. But, with an older SUV, I'd rather not save the $50 now at the expense of not having performance data which may or may not indicate an issue with my 4Runner later on down the line. Is that making sense?

What are your thoughts on the differences between the two?

I use my tps my water temp and my voltage daily. idk im a stickler for knowing more and having it at my finger tips when I want it so yeah id say the SCII but thats just me. :biggrin2:

I would go with the scangauge 2. The Xgauge features are really nice as you can program in an ATF temp gauge. That was one of the reasons I bought the scangauge was to monitor ATF.

Let's be generous and say that careful monitoring of your driving habits through your Scangauge nets you a 5% savings in fuel consumption. That means you will need to spend $3,200 in fuel before you break even on the cost of the Scangauge.

There is a free alternative. Monitoring your mileage with simple math is very accurate and the sample size can be adjusted to your liking. Simply fill up your vehicle and zero out your trip-meter. Next drive around as much as you like. If you are interested in saving fuel, there are several guides give tips on modifying your driving behavior to boost MPG's. When you are ready for your completely accurate MPG, simply pull into the nearest gas station and fill up your vehicle. Then simply divide the amount of miles on your trip meter by the amount of gallons you just put into your vehicle. Voila! Instant, 100% accurate MPG's. And you have $160 more to spend on over-priced fuel :biggrin2:

Not trying to talk you out of a fun purchase, just thought I'd share a free, easy alternative. If you get the SCII let us know how you like it!

My autel scan tool can do all that, and more. Though i spent 500$ on it. lol

So can my BR-3 OBD2 interface (along w/my laptop). The BR-3 only ran me $99...but like your Autel scan tool it's a tuning/diagnostic tool, not a quick reference gauge.

I don't think it will save you anything because you won't change your habbits. I have an mpg meter on the 330i and it hasn't stopped me from 'hittin it' when I feel like it.

I would like to get a ScanGaugeII as well. Mostly so I can read codes. I should have bought one when Amazon had them listed for $125

If you don't care about ATF temp then skip the Scangauge products altogether and get an Ultragauge. They are cheaper and the display is way nicer.

I'm about to get the SC II as well.

More for monitoring everything, and trying to get the damn CEL figured out the right way. Tired of throwing parts at the damn thing.....

the gauge looks nice but would serve a minimal purpose to someone like myself who has access to a Snap-On Solus Ultra for the diagnostic end, but having access to all your on-board monitored systems (ATF temp, EGT, etc) is nice plus the mpg meter.
Could also look into Apex-i's SAFC controler or one of their many other systems.

Then download this free app, Torque (or pay $5 for the pro version):

And you'll have a device just as good as a scan gauge for $20. I got it so that I could read my trans temps in my 98 but apparently they didn't put an actual temperature sensor in the trans until 99, just a dummy overheat switch. So I'm assuming the scangauge couldn't even read it in my 98 anyway.

Been happy with my setup so far, just a thought if you're looking for something cheaper...
