ScanGauge II question

I'm in need of an ODB-II reader, but I'm not sure I want to mount a SG2 in my truck. I'm thinking about the SG2 to keep my options open. Does the SG2 require extra connections beyond the ODB-II connector (power/ground) or can it be used like a stand-alone code reader if I decide not to mount it in my truck?

Nope, It's all powered with the DLC connector. if you route the cable out of the way then it will be hard to move around unless you get a second cable.

Well, now that I've got the silly thing I need to think of how I want to install it. Harper's method will put it in front of the display since I have the steering wheel too high to let the SG snuggle in-between the display and steering column. Center console is out since mine is going to be full of ham radio gear. The left dash, below the switches is going to be full of add-on switches so that is out as well.

Found Blendmount for the SG on Amazon but I'll probably need an extension cable to get to the OBDII connector:

What did you mount yours with? I'm having a hard time keeping mine in place, eventually it starts leaning towards whe side that the cable runs down. I'm using that 3m industrial double sided mounting tape.

About a 2" x 1" piece of adhesive backed industrial velcro is all. I think the key is to zip tie the cable underneath so the weight of the cable isn't pulling on it.

that mirror mount is how I thought about doing mine too but never got around to it. I had mine down by the shifter and it really took my attention off some things once in awhile.

Don't listen to Harper. That hack doesn't know what he is talking about. This is how you mount it.

I picked up the SG at AutoZone for $159, not the cheapest but I needed to get a scanner quickly to check for codes after installing my ICON lift. I haven't looked for an extension cable either since I'm not sure that's the way I want to go. The SG cable is OBDII to RJ48 male and a OBDII extension cable would be too bulky so I would go RJ48. However, I don't remember ever seeing a RJ48 extension cable. It will probably require a RJ48 coupler (aka gender-bender, Female-Female) and whatever length standard networking cable is needed.

Hey Grant, I think it seems like the blend mount might actually come with a 7' extension cable?

I was looking into the same exact mount and noticed that they list an extension cable as one of the parts included in the kit...however in their picture it seems like it's just a male to male cable, and I would assume we probably need a male to female cable for the simplest install.

I went back and read the info closer and you're right, it does include an extension cable. Along with a coupler. It looks like a RJ48 coupler which is what we would want.

This BlendMount Kit includes everything needed for a professional looking installation, including extension cable and inline coupler.

Given I have no knowledge of how to pull the dashboard and steering column apart, when installing the scangauge behind the stearing wheel, do you have to pull the stearing column apart to hide the wire etc? Kristin just sprouting and zip tie job without removing anything.

You won't need to pull anything apart if you mount it on the steering column. You can route the wire behind the dash to the OBD plug easily. If you WANT to pull the lower dash loose you can simply pull out under the steering column and it will give you more room to work.

It will take you all of 3 minutes to install the Scanguage there!

Thanks Antman. I took a look, looks like you can feed a cable through without removing anything. When you say pull the lower dash loose, does it just pull away by hand and then snap back into place afterwards?
