Scangauge II vs. Ultra-Gauge: First impressions

Ultra gauge does not show trans temps. 96-98s don't have a trans temp sensor, so nothing but an external gauge will read them, even a scangauge II. I will be going with an Ultra gauge since its only $69 right now...then adding a temp gauge on the pillar.

Would that not be idea for manuals? For some reason I'm under the impression most vehicles with manuals don't have temperature sensors....

I might pick one of these up to see if I can better improve my fuel economy with my lift and tires. I have a habit of loading the engine a lot and I think racing it might be easier on the engine and provide better drive ability and mileage....

I'm also interested in a more accurate temperature guage and voltage readout.

I'm going to have to research this more.

I'm not sure about the manual thing, just know the OBDII on those years don't have a tranny sensor. I'm getting an Ultragauge for the same reasons as you...better accuracy on mpg, water temps, and mph.

Actually, if you get me that code the price will be reduced because I'll be keeping the ScanGuage for the TundaFUN that's taking its place.

Here's where I mounted my Ultra Guage. The only thing I wish it had (besides trans temp) is a volt meter. That should be the easiest thing to display. But it is useful for gas mileage (and accurate on my truck), exact engine temp, air intake temp, etc. It has a decent display and is cheap.

Thats exactly where I plan on mounting mine. Heard people complain the Ultras are too bulky, but that is a perfect spot for it. No reason to spend the extra money on a Scangauge if they accomplish the same thing for me.

Double-sided tape on the holder. I pop it out of the holder to press the buttons.

I used Velcro in the same spot. Mine is a tad bit higher, so I can still press the buttons without taking it out.

I think the ONLY thing I would like about the SG over the UG is just the trans temp gauge.
I much prefer the size, gauge layout & usability of the UG.

Not to mention it's $100 cheaper.

Ive had mine in that spot since fall of 2011 using the supplied suction cup and it has never lost its suction.

I just bend it close to the suction cup.
and cj80 is correct it never falls off.

So, I'm bumping this thread and checking to see if anyone has anything new to add.

Is the UG a more accurate depiction of the instantaneous MPG?

I have a 2000 'runner: how difficult is it to be able to get the SG ii to display the tranny temp? ie. downloads, special codes, etc?

For whichever gauge you own, what, in your opinion, makes it better than the other? I know the cost is obviously a large factor, but what else? Thanks!

I couldnt care less about the SG's performance stuff, never will use it. I just like the size.

So size does matter!! ROFL

I have the UG. I have never seen a scangauge in person. From pictures I would say the UG display is much better, price is better and size is great. You have a 2000 though, so unless you are going to add a separate trans temp gauge I would go with the SG. I think there is a code you have to enter to enable it but lots of people have done it so it can't be that difficult.

I was going to mount mines to the left of the steering wheel. But hated that the tape sat a bit too high over the panel. So i mounted in the middle above the 4x4 shift.

I may move it and just trim the tape.

Does the Scangauge or Ultragauge do something better than a OBD2 bluetooth reader with Torque Pro?

I have the OBD2 w Torque Pro app and spent $28 for everything - reads trans temp, coolant temp, mpg etc. engine codes etc.

Are the diagnostics better? I have never used the other gauges.
