Must be location dependent then. Makes me wonder what other prices we're getting gouged on around here. It's not gas at least.
Cost of living lol. Houston TX versus nowhere WV. Prices are definitely different!

The KO and the KO2 always struck me as a desert terrain tire. Built for rocks, gravel, and hard pack dirt.
I'm sure that with the new compound, the new tire performs better than the outgoing KO. However, seeing as the tread pattern isn't all that different I don't see how it can be better than the Cooper or the new Falken. But I'm no expert. I'm just sitting here looking at the tread patterns of supposedly good wet/snow tires vs. those that historically bad wet/snow/ice (the KO, etc..).
If light off-roading was all I was looking to do, and I wanted a tire for Wet condition or Snow/Ice, I'd be looking at Michelin. Specifically the ones Philsey was looking at.
I am running these as well. I put them on after a very bad experience trying to make the Cooper AT3'S work. That's a story for another day.So many choices, probably many good ones. I've been using, and love, Firestone Destination A/T. They are fairly inexpensive in the hierarchy of tire prices and I find them to last a decent amount of time (50,000 mi) and offer fantastic performance on and off road.
I'm actually kind of surprised they don't get more love.
Obviously opinions vary, but I'm happy enough to keep using them.

I agree, with MeefZah, they don't get enough love. They ride well, are very quiet, don't seem to wander all over the road. They are available in LT275/70/17's in a C load range. The other bonus is that most Firestone corporate stores have the necessary centering cone and wheel flange to properly balance the tires and rims. My local store is run by a racing enthusiast, so he actually knew how to use all the aforementioned goodies.
They are not as cool looking as some, but you should go check them out, they look good on and only weight 8lbs more than the stock tires in the 275 size. I'm sure the stock size in a p-rated version would be very close to stock weight. The LT has a deeper tread, but the P has a treadwear warranty.
Too many choices, but make sure you interview whoever is going to put them on. Read up on the tire thread here, so you can educate yourself on what you need to know. Shakey steering wheels are annoying!
you in sales? that was a pretty concise and convincing.
it seems a lot of folks on here are either P-rated, or E...i don't see many folks mentioning C rated tires. the AT3 is pretty much the only tire that i'm interested in that comes in a 275, but it's C rated. At what point does one go from P to LT rated tires?
... only thing I found is that it's only rated to 112mph.
Just curious why you'd be concerned with this? The 4Runner isn't capable of 112 mph (at least not without some electronics modifications). And it's nearly impossible to find an all-terrain tire in LT/Load E that has a speed rating higher than "S" (112 mph) -- most are "R" or lower.
Edit:
It appears it may be capable of 112+ mph -- I just haven't tried it in mine yet (seems someone on YouTube already tried it in a 2015). And the factory tires also carry a speed rating of "S". I'm not tire expert, but I'm willing to bet that there's a safety margin in the speed ratings, so a speed rating of *only* 112 mph shouldn't be a major concern versus a quality tire with good traction characteristics.
1. Toyo Open Country AT2 - size P285/70R17
2. Falken Wildpeak AT3W - size P285/70R17
3. Cooper Discoverer AT 3 - Two different size choices:
285/70R17 (117 T) / LT275/70R17 (114 S)
3. Cooper Discoverer AT 3 - Two different size choices:
285/70R17 (117 T) - D=32.8", W=45 lbs. TD=14/32
Pros=Lightest choice for a 285 size, Cons=Only load rated as a B (4 ply), less aggressive looks
LT275/70R17 (114 S) - D=32.2", W=47 lbs. TD=17/32
Pros=smallest diameter, so little or no chance of rubbing with the lift, incredible 17/32 tread depth, load rating C (6 ply), Cons=Smaller size may not look as good as the 285 size with the lift, less aggressive looks.
Anyway, if anybody has any thoughts, anecdotes or information that might help me make a decision please chime in.
I've been following this thread very closely as well and I've been looking at the Falken Wildpeak AT3W's. It's been difficult to find a lot of reviews on it, specifically for the snow performance. It's an AT tire that also has a severe snow service rating, which sounds like a great compromise between buying a second set of dedicated snow ties. Yes I know dedicated snow tires are the best. A lot of people seem to agree that they are very quiet.
I have Firestone destination A/T's that have been great (very quiet, wear like iron, I've driven them through feet of snow). They are going on 7 years old though. I was thinking about just buying them again, but I'm wondering if the Falkens would be better in the snow due to the severe snow rating(I daily drive my 3rd gen in the winter).
The cooper AT3's also look really good, I just wonder how loud they are on the highways.
I've also been looking at the Cooper ATW's, however I can't find anywhere that has them! They are supposed to be amazing in winter conditions (severe snow rating) and look very similar to the Falkens. Here's a link. Cooper Tire & Rubber Company - Discoverer A/TW?
Not sure if any of this helped. I also live in the chicagoland area so let me know how those Adventurer A/T's are.
Well, I had Toyo Open Country AT (Load E) tires on my 2008 Tundra, and even with a horrible alignment issues that I -- stupidly -- didn't catch soon enough they still got over 50,000 miles on them and were definitely usable.
The Tundra was totaled in a wreck with, IRC, 54,xxx miles on it.
I though the Toyo's were very good in the winter and rain, too, and they were very quiet.
I'm surprised with all the talk about Coopers, BFGs, Falken, etc there is no talk of Nittos. I personally like Nitto a lot. Planning on getting a set of Ridge Grapplers (285/70/17 in C load). I like the Terra Grapplers on my TRDP, at 28k miles they still have chalk lines in them, and have tons of wear left. My brother is on his 2nd set of Terra Grapplers, the first set lasted him more than 70k miles.
Second Update:
So last night was a nightmare, I would recommend using Pep Boys for price match purposes only and going to a competitor that price matches. While their price was easily the best I found, the service left a lot to be desired.
1. They tried to force me to take the Road Hazard warranty over the phone in order to honor the sales price. When I advised I didn't have to on the web site they refused to back down and made me schedule online.
2. I explained I needed to pick my pregnant wife up from our town's train station 20 minutes away at 5:45 PM, they said come in at 3:45 PM and we will get you in and out. Suffice to say at 4:05 PM my 4Runner wasn't even pulled into a bay.
3. The tech was not careful and popped my center caps onto the ground, not even trying to catch them or remove them gently.
4. They broke not one but two TPMS sensors.
5. They installed Cooper "Adventurer HT" tires not the correct "Adventurer AT."
6. I did not get rung up until 7:11 PM, and they did not offer anything initially to compensate for the experience.
7. Did I mention my pregnant wife had to walk 15 minutes home in dress clothes in 102 degree heat index?
I have an e-mail into Pep Boys customer service, and hopefully someone higher up does something to fix this situation.
Beyond that the "Adventurer AT" tires are great. The look aggressive, they have been just as quiet as stock. They seemed to balance fine, as I have had it up to 60 mph with no noticeable shake in the steering wheel. They are also $108 per tire in stock size through Pep Boys which means the ATP should price match out to that at Discount Tire and buying 4 qualifies you for $70 back from Cooper. It supposed to rain today so I'll report back if I get to drive in wet conditions. Overall think this tire was the right choice!
