Scion HU

Hey folks-
I have been lurking around a bit and have already gained a lot of valuable insight into this vehicle. I finalized the deal last night on my T4R and want to upgrade my stock radio/CD to the Scion Pioneer. My dealer quoted me $248 for the single disc unit :awais:! Are there better deals out there? Are there other after market radios that would be a significant enhancement over the stock unit? Any input would be appreciated.

The single disc unit should run you no more than $100 if you were to buy it off of ebay or from the scion forums and the 6-disc should cost you no more than $250. The price the dealer quoted you isn't bad for a brand new one I suppose, but I know you could find one much cheaper.

I found one on the scion forums and paid $120 shipped and it was WELL WORTH the money. It sounds much better than stock, it still LOOKS stock, it works with the steering wheel controls, and it plays MP3's, so you really can't go wrong.

Is there anything that needs to be purchased to install it. Like a harness adapter? Or is it just straight plug and play. Is the backlight color the same as the rest of the instrumentation in the vehicle?

Everything is plug and play, no need to buy anything, just take your old head unit out, and plug the Scion one right in. The only difference is that you'll see two antenna wires, just plug the one into the Scion HU that fits, and tape the other one off, you don't really need it.

And YES, the backlight on the single-disc is the EXACT same color as the rest of the instrumentation, so it looks just like stock

You really can't go wrong with the single-disc HU. I sold my old stock CD Cassette player on ebay and got $100 so in the end I paid nothing for the upgrade

Does the Scion 2005 work in the 04 4Runner Sport? Below is a quote from the Toyota web site. Are these specs better than the 04 Scion?

It'll work as long as you have the base 6-speaker system in your 4Runner. If you have the JBL system, it won't work.

I've had my "2005" unit for a few months now and still love it. The two new features are the welcome screen text and srt, everything else is pretty much the same as the 2004 model. The SRT feature really does improve the sound of MP3 files.

They were unaware that you could swap the 2 HU's and still have all controls work. (steering wheel) I like the different modes that it has and it sounds great with the stock speakers. I like many others in here, highy recommend this mod/swap.

I put one in my 01 MR2 Spyder plug and play.

Do you know how to change the greeting? says "scion" when you turn it on for a couple sec.

1. with the radio turned on hold the"A" button and turn the car to the off position then back to ACC
2. the line below "SCION" will be blinking hold down the "M" button and turn the car off and then back on to ACC.
3. using the volume controls,choose the letter then hit the "A" button to progress.
4. there are numbers and symbols lowercase,upper case letters,just progress through.

BTW this will only work with the newer scion HU's IICRC the T1804 units.

extra antenna plug

Just installed my SCION single disc unit. Very happy with whole process and results. It seems that with more Scions appearing in the road, the prices on ebay are coming down. I got my for $86 including shipping. Very happy with my first ebay purchase.

Anyway back to the install.
I have read about taping up the extra antenna wire. However, I was curious so I started looking at the back end of the unit. I found that the SCION head unit DOES HAVE A SECOND ANTENNA SOCKET for the smaller antenna wire! However, it is covered up.

I removed the thick metal heat sink, and one half of the sheet metal cover. The smaller jack is right next to the main antenna jack. (Remove the screws with the little arrows next to them.) I measured the location of the second jack and drilled holes in the sheet metal, and the thick cast aluminum heat sink. Reassembled, and installed.

I can attest that the reception is better than my original 4R unit.

WARNING - Do not drill holes with out removing the parts being drilled. You DO NOT want little metal chips in your Head Unit!

Actually there is...
My 4R came with a 6 disc changer in the center console, so I was very concerned that it may not hook up to the new SCION unit. But lo and behold there was a connector for it!!!

I don't know if it will do you any good with other external sources... I bet there is some sort of adaptor out there...

The SCION unit controls the disc changer perfectly, just like the OE. Steering wheel controls too.
