Just installed my SCION single disc unit. Very happy with whole process and results. It seems that with more Scions appearing in the road, the prices on ebay are coming down. I got my for $86 including shipping. Very happy with my first ebay purchase.

Anyway back to the install.
I have read about taping up the extra antenna wire. However, I was curious so I started looking at the back end of the unit. I found that the SCION head unit DOES HAVE A SECOND ANTENNA SOCKET for the smaller antenna wire! However, it is covered up.

I removed the thick metal heat sink, and one half of the sheet metal cover. The smaller jack is right next to the main antenna jack. (Remove the screws with the little arrows next to them.) I measured the location of the second jack and drilled holes in the sheet metal, and the thick cast aluminum heat sink. Reassembled, and installed.

I can attest that the reception is better than my original 4R unit.

WARNING - Do not drill holes with out removing the parts being drilled. You DO NOT want little metal chips in your Head Unit!

Sorry bud, I don't have time to take my dash apart again...

I did however find a pic online, I circled the jack that my 6 disc changer plugged into, as well as the location of where you will need to drill the hole.

I just bought a 6 cd changer from someone on scionlife.com and it came today. I don't know if it'll work or not but I drilled the hole for the 2nd antenna.

Few questions...

I have been looking to do this md for a while now. I really need help getting a better understanding of this...

1) Are both Scion HU exact plug and play fits (single disc or 6 CD)?

I know that the 4runner single and 6 disc don't have the same face plate shape.

2) What is the major difference between both attenna plags? Does it really need the second plug?

3) What was the easiest was to drill the hole for the second plug.

4) Lastly, I currently have my XM commander plugged into my 4runner stock radio through the CD changer port. I got the adapter from Blitzsafe/PIE (myradiostore.com).

I would really like to connect it to the SCION HU so that it works directly off the rasio. Hopefully this can improve my sound quality 100 times. Is the a way to do this?

Basically, how do you activate/access the XM on the scion?

Re: Few questions...

1) Both the single and 6-disc Scion units use the same plugs. The stock 4Runner non-JBL systems also use this type of plug (10- and 6-pin). These three radios also share the same shape.

The 4Runner JBL systems use a 20-pin connector and won't work with the Scion units with the 6-disc unit having a different shape (and a different center console trim piece).

2) Not too sure about the difference between the two antennas, but IMO, having both would help with reception, I got better reception with my stock unit in certain areas.

3) No idea on drilling the hole, still working up the courage to take it apart.

4) You can go ahead and connect your current XM into the changer port on the Scion unit and use it as you did in your stock unit (not sure about 6-disc model). To activate the integraded XM feature of the Scion units, you'll have to buy the receiver and antenna from Toyota/Scion. It's about $300, so it is pretty expensive and then you need to activate it which should be pretty straight forward if you've activated XM before.

Most tell you what year of Scion it came out of.

I got mine off E-bay too and it stated in the auction that it came off a 05 Scion

It should also be marked on the head unit T1804 IIRC.

Well, the 6 cd unit was broke and the seller wouldn't take it back. I tried to work with PayPal but they weren't any help. I called my credit card and did a chargeback and I bought a single disc unit from ebay for $92 shipped. It came today and I installed it in about 15 mins. Really easy.

I just cut the metal covering the 2nd antenna plug and swapped the rear heatsink with the one on the 6 cd HU so I wouldn't have to drill another hole.

Everything works great! I burned a mp3 cd with some folders and it's better than having a cd changer.

2k34r - I used a drill bit (3/8"?) and then used a dremel to open it a bit more for an exact fit. The metal is very soft and it took a short time to drill the hole. Took another 5 mins with a dremel to get it to the size I needed. Definitely take the parts off before you start drilling/cutting.

I just came across this post to fix the ERROR 3 on the 6cd changers:

BTW, the single disc unit is from a '04 Scion but I was able to change the "SCION" name when you power it on. Now it reads "4RUNNER"

Alright I got a few questions about this upgrade. I am a total noob at installs of anything.

1st I have an 04 Sport with stock system. Can I put in either single or 6 disc Scion headunit?

2nd Can I pick up either of these Scion headunits at the dealership?

3rd Will the stealership install the unit for me? I know I can install it myself but I am hopeless in installing anything of my rig.
