what are the differences between the 6 disk and the single disk - only the changer?

Is there a link or thread that tells more about the radio?

Glad to hear that the steering wheel controls work with this! How about the rear seat audio?

Also, does this unit have aux inputs for hooking up your Ipod?
 
I had the standard six speaker setup before I installed the Scion HU and everything works fine, just as it came from the factory. As far as I can tell there are no inputs for an I-pod, however it does play MP3's so just burn some CD's from you MP3 collection and your in. Also CD's recorded in MP3 format can display the artist, the album and the track name.
 
Mark, I've seen a lot of people paying around $300 for the 6 disc ... I would not pay much more than that, as you nearly always see them being sold for around $300.

good luck! (p.s. i just changed out mine for the single-disc and LOVE it ... night and day difference ... just remember when you get it, you'll have the take the metal bracket/mounts off of your old unit and replace the ones on the new unit with them in order for it to fit in the HU space)
 
Mark- any replies yet? Let us know. I am very excited at the prospect of getting rid of the stock head unit. SO glad to hear that everyone seems happy with the Scion unit. Anyone not notice a major difference?
 
i did it via PayPal ... i dunno what you feel about paypal, but it usually seems relatively safe to me!
 
you mean like if the person doesn't ship the item you pay for? i would surely think they provide that kind of protection, considering they work so closely with ebay ... i'd think that kind of thing happens all the time, so i'm sure they have something like that ... sorry that i don't know for sure. :(
 
A good price for the 6-CD Changer is around 220 shipped. If your patient you can get one for less. Otherwise, the demand will drive up the cost for the HU.

I am picking up my Scion Head Unit from somebody I found willing to sell his on Scionlife. It should be a clean transaction considering I will be able to inspect it before handing $$ to a perfect stranger.

This is in NYC that is.
 
I bought the 6 disc that was listed in the classified section last month...but the shipper put it in a very small box with very little packing material around it. It was dropped by the post office on its corner, which cracked the face-plate and broke a tab off. The crack wasn't too visible so I was going to try to keep it if it worked. I took apart my dash, hooked it up, and all it did was display 'ERROR 13' and nothing more. So I just shipped it back and got a refund, so now I'm looking for another one, and hopefully this time it will be packaged a little better.

One thing I noticed was a decal on top of the head unit that stated that it needed to be put into 'SHIP MODE' before attempting to ship it. This is supposed to prevent damage during normal shipping conditions so you all may want to mention that before you have yours shipped.
 
OK guys, time for a reality check.

Why would you spend 300 bucks for a factory radio?!?!?

For 300 bucks, you can get a top of the line dual-DIN radio that will have much better sound and quality than a factory radio.

Sure, for 80 to 150 bucks, I can justify the Scion radios being a good deal. But upwards past 200, man, I don't know. Just can't justify something like that.
 
No, not with the steering wheel controls. I barely use the steering wheel controls, kind of think they are overrated IMO.
 
Scott- please elaborate what type of head unit you are talking about. You gotta figure the Scion owners are removing their head units for something better.
 
Different needs I guess. I was referring more or less to the single-disc scion radio, which I viewed as a good add-on for better sound quality with it's higher-rated amp.

For 250 or whatever for a 6 disc radio, that's not a bad deal, since a CD-changer will run at least a hundred or two.
 
Scott- does this unit fit directly into the 2004 runner without modification and how happy are you with the comparison to the head unit's sound (which has no midrange as you know)--thanks for your post! Randy
 
Actually - I don't have the Scion radio...yet.

I am currently working with two different people right now, and will end up with one of theirs. One offered it to me for $100 shipped, the other I had to make an offer to. So I'll see which one replies first, which radio is newer and a slightly better deal, and then go with it.

But, yes. Stock radio, sucks. No midrange indeed. Vocals are horrible. From what I've read, those that have upgraded to Scion radios say it is well worth the money to buy one of these radios. Apparently, even better to upgrade to this radio than just upgrade speakers, as the stock speakers sound a lot better with this radio, yet those who just upgrade speakers still complain of poor quality sound going to the speakers. So, my conclusion on this was to upgrade the radio first and see what sound quality difference there is. The Scion radios are 160 watts I believe, our stock 4-runners aren't even a fraction of that I bet.

Congrats! Let me know how you like the sound difference. I expect to be purchasing a single disc one very shortly. I didn't really need the 6 cd changer... but both radios are the same besides that, so I'm interested to hear your take on the sound improvement.
