This is pretty unreasonable. Sure, I wheel with friends when I can, but I don't always go camping with other parties. There are times when I am out alone and I do not see a problem with wheeling alone as long as normal precautions are taken. But this is an entirely different discussion.
I am not asking if it can do it, I was asking if this info in this thread was current for the 2016. It was a legit question, for which you gave a useless answer.
Really? Because I was also kidding. See how that works? Tough to know if someone is being serious or kidding or "wanting to be an ass" based on a one line sentence. And I will admit, you DID prick a sensitive spot. I hate the nanny state of our society these days.
Either way, just looking for some actual info here, as I am new to 4Runners and all the new-fangled crap they come equipped with.

I suggest you A) Read the manual and B) Read a few posts of a specific forum member before passing judgement. Welcome to the forum and remember people will gladly help if you have tried to help yourself first.
We all joke around a lot and you will see that as you search more and more topics.

no problem.... the manual is an amazing piece of literature. You can even have them program your key fob to roll you windows down and if you hear a thud, grease your shaft!

Yeah, so far, like many forums, I have found this forum is very difficult to search. It's easier to do a Google search and find threads here than it is to search on the forum itself. I have started reading the manual, just haven't had the time to get completely through it. I have been on many forums for a long time, so I am familiar with how forums work. And I am a person who always tries to help, even when noobies post questions that are asked frequently.

Yeah, I am getting through it. I've had the 4Runner for less than a week, and with the holiday I just haven't had the time I need to sit down with it and read it all the way through.

Just remember that very little has changed on the 5th gen 4Runner in the six years it has been available. If you find a post from 2011 chances are it is still relevant today.

Pro Tip: Use the Google search bar the top of the site page instead of the site's Search function. It'll use Google to search an index of only this website. If you're looking for 5th gen related inquiries only, I'd suggest by starting with the term "5th" and going from there

You would think it would be close to what the Tacoma did with a series of key turns and trip button combos, kinda like the old Contra days, to turn it off. Good ole Toyota and not having similarities across the board, but then that would make us Ford. :bolt:

the chime provides no protection..... buckling the seatbelt does

Yeah, I was actually thinking there is something more tangible to turn it off, like unplugging a wire or something, but again, I am coming from 15+ year old vehicles to this new space ship of a thing. Sounds like all I need is the software and the cable to get in there and shut it off. I think the real challenge is finding the software. The cables seem to be readily available.

I always wear my seat belt but agree that the chime is annoying as hell (for instance when I am moving my truck around my property where a collision has a 0% chance of happening).
But it's more like the annoying labels on products like "Don't use this hair dryer in the shower". My opinion is that if people are that stupid, they need to be removed from the gene pool anyway.
Big Brother is watching and has your best interests at heart. ;-)
Even more scary is the black box that ALL cars have had for years now. Get in a wreck and they can even tell the insurance company and police when you had your last bowel movement.

If you guys really don't wear the belts cut it and keep the buckle latched all the time.
Or buy a used one out of a junkyard I'm sure more than 1 toyota uses the same size belt latch piece. Then keep it in the center console fore when you're on the trail and buckle it in.
I don't know how this would play with the seat sensors for the air back though...

The seatbelt chime can be turned off.........i find it annoying if my passenger doesn't put it on fast enough.....that's why i tried to get my programmed to not have the audible chime.....Toyota said that they can't do it, however, some have been successful at having it turned off.

Didnt say it will protect me, but it is part of safety. The chime reminded me a few times to buckle my seatbelt. Don't tell me this never happened to you or to anyone. It is the very reason why it is annoying, so that people will be reminded.

Some dealers don't want a liability issue. If they turn off the chime (even at your request) and the unthinkable happens, then they could be at risk. Easier to just refuse to do it. Suppose you sell or trade it in and it doesn't get programmed back and there is an accident - then what?
