Secondary Air Injection Pump Failure on V8's! Important!

I Just picked up an 05 with the 4.7 vvti and the owner gave me maintenance records which shows they brought it to a private shop on 2 separate occasions.

1st time at 166k to replace Secondary air injection switching valves and intake manifold gasket. 2nd time about 6k miles later states they replaced air injection pump.

No check engine lights on currently, but I did notice a high pitch shop vac sound people mentioned in this thread. Anyone with more knowledge on this, do you think I should just do the bypass to be safe?

Should also mention this only happens at cold start, I noticed it because I added remote start, hard to tell from inside the truck.

I'd bypass it now before the valves get stuck in the open position. It's extremely easy to install if you don't need to install the plates. The kit is only like $50 so why not. I installed mine three years ago in about 10 minutes and I've been running perfect and passing smog inspections ever since.

I haven’t received an email from anyone about a kit on 8/2. I can surely help if needed.

Did I send it to the wrong e-mail address?

Gah.....Well.....I found it. In my gmail spam folder. You're in the middle of a bunch of political emails that were in the folder as well!
I might be too late but I'll reply to your original message.

Welp, it finally happened to my 06' V8 with 133,000 miles. Started hearing the noise last week at start up and took until yesterday to learn what was going on. Luckily no codes have been thrown yet and I will stop driving the car until the fix is in. SlyFox, an email awaits you.

Heya, Sly Fox,

Bought an '08 V8 back in November with 139K+ miles and it's recently started making the discussed fan-like start-up noise, not long after it threw a CEL and minor emissions code that I read and cleared. Think I'll e-mail you for a bypass kit and head this mess off at the pass! Is it still: [email protected]?

Much obliged!

slyfox75 I sent you an email last night, followed up with PayPal this morning. TIA

My 286k mile 05 v8 has made it this far... I don't see why I'd gamble on it being ok out to 500k miles since I'm finally getting to spend money on her.

Since everyone in this thread is so helpful I will ask: Are there any other preventive "must haves" that you can point me to?

hey guys

i had a P0412, and P0418 a couple weeks ago, after replacing my starter. just wanted to report in let you folks know that the SlyFox bypass got rid of the P0418, and i had to buy Hewitt-Tech's Valve Solenoid Pack to get rid of the P0412.

Hewitt's VSP is completely separate from their/other bypass kits, and should work with any bypass kit you choose. i only say this because when i called to ask, the tech on the line said the their VSP only works with their kit.

hope this helps someone

I had the P1445 code show up on my 05 4Runner a few months ago. I talked to Slyfox and ultimately bought the Hewitt kit. When attempting to remove my very rusty bolts (I live in NJ) they just snapped off with hardly any effort.

I realized that it was a bit too complicated for me, so I just sucked it up and took it in to my local shop to have them fix the issue the right way. While it wasn't cheap, I had expected the cost to be closer to $2500. I was pleasantly surprised that it was "only" $1700 to fix it, including having them replace the rusty bolt that I snapped off.

I've owned this truck since it was new, and it's my only car. So, I tend to spend money on it when needed, as buying a new car would be much more costly. I try to keep it in top shape and expect it to last forever. So, ultimately I decided on this approach vs. the bypass option.

I'm including a shot of my invoice for those considering having this fixed at their shop.

If you are mechanical inclined enough to install a Secondary Air Pump Valve Bypass Kit you are mechanically inclined enough to just replace the pump. In my experience the kits are not the end all solution.

I have a 2008 4Runner with the 4.7 with 170K and tried both the Hewitt and RuTech kits and neither were perfect at eliminating codes but the Hewitt was much better.

When the AUX starter relay wire was connected I would get intermittent no starts. The solution according to Hewitt is to remove the wire but then I would get error the engine was running rich if I left the car to idle and warm up. Between all these codes I would get one for a stuck control valve that would come and go depending on temperature. I traced this back to moisture freezing in the control valve do to no air moving though it.

In the end there is no short cut.

I replaced the pump and the control valve (450 for OEM) using a $30 socket set with an extra 6 inch extension and joint socket. There are plenty of videos on youtube that explain the steps and it took me about 4.5 hrs with 1 hr spent removing the bypass kit and block off plates which was the hardest part of the job. This time saved me $800 in labor at an independent.

The idea of a bypass is great but in the end I could not get it to solve the codes and limp modes with out addressing the rout cause.
