Security system reset?

Is there a method for doing this? My 2012 SR5 seems to have a security system but it also does not seem to work and was wondering if there is some sort of system reset. It's not a keyless entry, has the lock/unlock buttons on the key. I can lock the truck and later open a door or the hood and no alarm. The red lock icon light constantly flashes and is only steady green when driving. The panic button works tho. I won't be due for the first service when I will let the dealer fix if needed for another couple months, but was hoping there was a simple reset procedure that doesn't involve a battery disconnect(hopefully)which I'm thinking would cause a lot of required resets.

I'm not quite sure if I understand your question, but I'm going to try. You stated that your SR5 does NOT, have a keyless entry system, yet, you said that your key does have "Lock/unlock" buttons on it.

Now, if you have a hand held transmitting device that came with your SR5, then that would indicate that your truck has a "Keyless entry system".

You also stated that you can lock your trunk, then later open it and..."No alarm". If you're locking your trunk with the physical key, and then later, opening the car door and expecting the alarm to trip, it won't. Setting the alarm requires you to use the hand held keyless device.

I'm sure that I misunderstood at least one thing that you said, so perhaps you could reiterate your trouble, and then I can try again to help you work this out.

Thanks rigtec, sorry if I wasn't more clear. I have a real key with 3 buttons on it ,lock,unlock and panic. If I lock the door with the button on the key or the one inside the truck it doesn't seem to set anything. I leave the window down and reach in and open the door, no alarm. I can pop the hood with the release lever, no alarm. The manual says the lock icon should be a steady light then when the alarm sets after 30 seconds it should flash. Mine always flashes and is red (unless I'm driving then it is green and steady, no flashing.) This makes me think something is not right with it. The panic alarm does work tho. I thought there might be a reset method for the security system , a reboot or something. I'd heard lots of stuff needs resetting after a battery disconnect, so was hoping it didn't involve that. But.....?
The manual also says the alarm is set locking with the key or the inside button. Doesn't seem to matter which locking method is used according to that book.

It sounds like you need to pay a visit to your friendly local dealership, to perhaps "Re-activate" your security system. There may be a thread around here on the subject of a security reset, but it may be easier to just drop by the Toyota dealer and have it checked; should only take a few minutes.

I have a 2012 "Limited" with a smart key; not exactly the same as your set-up. But should I come up with anything that may help you, I'll definitely shoot you a line.

Right, I was confusing smart key with keyless. I had a miata that had a smart key. Cool feature. I'll have the dealer fix it.

smart key/keyless, now I understand the confusion. Yes, once they reprogram your keyless device, you should be all set; it could also be a bad circuit board/fuse/power supply issue, to the alarm system itself (not key device related). If you remember, let me know how you made out; I'd be interested to know. Oh BTW, that's a nice looking truck in the snow, in your avatar; it looks really good!

There is no factory alarm coming from Japan. Try yours Greg .Some dealerships have port or dealer installed aftermarket alarms on them.

They only have anti-theft which is this....

The engine immobilizer is a state-of-the-art anti-theft system. When you insert your key into the ignition switch or bring a Smart Key fob into the vehicle, the key transmits an electronic code to the vehicle. The engine will only start if the code in the transponder chip inside the key or Smart Key fob matches the code in the vehicle’s immobilizer. Because the transponder chip is embedded in the key or Smart Key fob, it can be costly to replace. If you lose a key or Smart Key fob, your Toyota dealer can help. Alternatively, you can find a qualified independent locksmith to perform high-security key services by consulting your local Yellow Pages or by contacting www.aloa.org.

I'm glad you chimed in. I really wasn't sure what to think about the alarm system in my truck. Now, the alarm system in my 1998 SR5, I thought was great. Along with having the Standard alarm features e.g., engine immob., hood & door security...etc, it also had, "Breaking glass sensor" whose sensitivity could be increased, or decreased; taking into consideration the possibility of background noise (city/country), to help avoid those false alarms.

But the security system that I have now just seems to be a "No Frills", low-end "Acme, El Cheap-o"!! It has no glass sensor, no motion sensor...I dunno, do you like it/trust it??

If this is correct then my manual is full of BS. It gives explicit instructions as to how to set and how to turn off if it is activated. Maybe it's a generic, one size fits all kind of manual. Although this would explain the reason it's not honking and flashing.

I was wrong!I just tested mine on my Limited and it does work! Woke the neighbors I'm sure as it wouldn't shut off right away! :frog:lol
I tested it before and it didn't work but must not have weighted the 30 seconds for it to set.

Great, so someone can smash your window or jimmy your door, steal all your stuff and take their sweet time doing it. I forget now, but several days ago I thought I saw a thread where a 4R was stolen. So what good is an immobilizer if a knowledgeable car thief can bypass and start the ignition anyway, and again taking their sweet time as their would be no noise alerting anyone.
Not cool! Guess I'll search the forum for good alarm recommendations. I find it hard to believe it would cost Toyota that much to include one and they'd have just passed the cost along anyway. If I'd had not just stupidly assumed I was getting a truck with an alarm system I'd have asked for one to be included to close the deal.

It was mine, I left it on for a few seconds to warm it up. A it was already on.
I hear its near impossible to "start the ignition" with out the key fob or whatever the SR5 uses.
