Not only is it alive but it's the T4ROTM I don't remember ever seeing this one before - an oldie but definitely a goodie.

Seriously though, I saw a 9/11 documentary recently and it was very inspiring watching what those firemen went through that day - many of them giving up their lives to save others. So FWIW I've decided to pick moschi as T4ROTM to show my appreciation. Not sure if he's even still on this board or not - but thanks for all you and your fellow firemen/paremedics do to help out those in dire straights.

To answer some questions:

If you actually want write ups for any of the stuff, let me know. we did the whole thing in house.

Rescue edition was just our name. it was just a normal 2005 4Runner SR5.

The lights vary by state, but in colorado, law fire, & ems vehicles can all use any colors, but pov's are limited to just red & clear.

Any close up pics of how you installed the TK890?
Did you just pull out that little compartment in the center console or are you hiding the electronics somewhere else? (cant remember if the 890 are a 2 piece setup)

sorry, missed this.

the radio is a 2 piece. that box in the back was custom made by us to fit, & the radio as well as the light & siren control boxes are mounted to the front of that box (right behind the back seats). then the head unit of the radio is mounted below the hvac controls onto a bracket that we cut to fit there. we then took out the compartment in the center to wire the controller for the lights/siren. (it comes out of there as well). anyway, it then runs to the control boxes next to the radio in the back, & all the main wiring just runs under the center console & under the carpet to the back.

What you said is true. However, I also heard that new police departments are not allowed to use red (as that is supposed to be only for Fire/rescue). When I was with Manassas City Police there was some debate about whether Prince William Police had to get rid of their red lights on their new cars. But there was also something about being grandfathered in.

On a side note, in Hawaii the Honolulu PD allows officers to use their POV's as their patrol cars. The department pays for the installation of all the equipment, and the officers get a stipend for the cost of maintenance. There were a TON of 4runners that were made into patrol cars.

Trust me that police (and sheriff, park ranger, etc.) vehicles in VA may use red lights - in conjunction with blue, so long as they have blue. I never heard anything about "new" departments not being allowed to use red, but the way they make so many laws in this commonwealth, I would not be surprised.


Chesterfield County and Richmond City PD have red & blue lights (but a few Richmond City patrol cars have blue only).

Henrico County has all-blue -- and, of course, so do our state troopers. Up until 1990, the VA State Police used to have a blue gumball on the roof and two red halogen lights in the grille. Back even further - until the early 1980s - the state police actually had a RED gumball light. (Remember those?)

Stafford County units have blue lights to the front of the car, and both red & blue facing to the rear. (I think that is very neat!) Prince William County uses red & blue together, and I have seen some Fairfax units running red & blue - but others with blue only. With the new LED light bars, you cannot tell until they are activated.

Most of the rural agencies (Hanover, Spotsylvania, Caroline, Orange, King George, etc.) seem to use all blue light bars, some of them with two amber halogen flashers facing to the rear.

Now, "red only" or "red & clear" would be reserved for an emergency vehicle of some sort (fire, EMS, ambulance, rescue, etc.). An exception is a fire marshal. They are considered law enforcement by statute, as they can make arrests in certain situations - arson, etc.; and some of them will have both red and blue lights on their department vehicle.

Anyway, I like the "Honolulu" way of letting officers drive their POV on duty. It would be cool to have my 2008 Mustang GT set up for patrol duty, especially if I did not have to pay for the gas!
