Sequoia in the 4Runner stable?

Sorry if this is of topic, actually, I'm pretty sure it is but I thought I'd give it a go. You see, you guys have been VERY helpful with just about everything we've ever posted regarding my son's 4Runner. Now, I am considering the purchase of a '14 Sequoia Limited with only 36K. I've registered with two Sequoia forums and have posted asking for general advice but have gotten ZERO responses. Hopefully, you guys will have atlas some information for me. Here goes: Basically, our Odyssey finally kicked the can and we are in a real need for a replacement vehicle right away. We have ALWAYS wanted a Sequoia and the one recently described just became available, the day after our Odyssey died. We have next to no time to research, in fact, we're driving 1.25 hours away to see it tomorrow. Can anyone advise in anyway> Are the Sequoias just as reliable as the 4Runners? Anything we should be checking for?

Check it out. Top 20 most reliable .....

Interesting - every Toyota in the USA but no LC.

But if you’re suggesting that LC/LX is not as reliable as 4runner or other Toyotas, then i don’t what to say..... :D

The day you "don't know what to say", will be a welcome event.

To infer I "suggested" such as thing is ludicrous, and I'll thank you not to bait me with such tripe.

I said "interesting", which is exactly what I meant. Troll elsewhere.

i agree 100%. My step-up from my Rnnr will be a nicely kept LC if i ever decide to actually take that step.

LoL, I'm going to find my wife a nicely kept LC or LX and take her 5th gen. These 5th gens are pretty awesome and would be a step up for me. An 07 Sequoia would be a step down for her and I'm sure she wouldn't be too happy to not have modern amenities. In all reality those amenities are important as she hauls the 3 kiddos around.

That hurts man. What was the point again of you posting that link?? And then say, “Interesting...every Toyota in USA but no LC”. I don’t know...it seems like you were trying to troll yourself!! And now blame me? Huh?!

Maybe you need to express your thoughts clearer? Just saying.

I have owned two Sequoias. I had a 2008 Platinum 4x2 that I enjoyed and then traded that for a 2014 Platinum 4x2 in the color and interior that my wife wanted. I held on to that one from 2013 until 2017 Oct. I loved the space that the Sequoia provided and also the power. 5.7 engine was always great.
Reliability is what you expect from Toyota, never had an issue mechanically.
The only reason we gave up the Sequoia a few months ago is because we our kids are older, one is driving and the other will be soon. We just aren't hauling around our kids and their friends as much as we used to. My wife picked up a Lexus RX to replace the Sequoia.

"Definition of interesting
: holding the attention : arousing interest : arousing curiosity or interest
"

I simply found that factoid interesting, not odd, not biased, not suggestive of anything ... just interesting, no more. Maybe "curious" ??

"But if you’re suggesting that LC/LX is not as reliable as 4runner or other Toyotas, then i don’t what to say....."

Maybe you need to express your thoughts with less assumption.

Geez...sensitive much?! But yeah, it is “interesting.” Glad you posted an irrelevant post.

Back to topic...TLC is the pinnacle of Toyota SUV. But Sequoia is definitely nice.

Personally if I were in the market for a Sequoia I'd look at a Land Cruiser. It basically depends how much you are looking to spend.

That's too much of a blanket statement. Both vehicles have their pros and cons. If I were to get a vehicle for extended expeditions in harsh environments, I would get an LC for sure. I had a 100 series. They are stout, solid, and will get you there without much fuss.

However, they are not a good fit for some people. Dare I say, for most people. Even ones that own LC's. Most are on-road only and never see dirt. And even if you do, the Sequoia can handle its own and be just as comfortable on plenty of backcountry roads. I would never let IFS/IRS bother me (have you seen RZR's?). They are plenty capable for most people, probably including the OP.

Size is another factor. Perhaps on tighter trails, Sequoia's girth will be a disadvantage. But I doubt most would even consider taking it to such places. But what it does offer is bigger cargo room, more passenger space, and a more comfortable ride, while still offering pretty decent off-road capability. And of course, price point is much much better.

I would not object to getting one. It'll get me to all the trailheads and camp spots I usually frequent.

And congrats, OP. You will love it.

Sequoia is similar to the Tundra as the 4 runner is to the Tacoma

Tacoma and 4Runner couldn't be more different. Same engine and tranny but totally different frames. 4R is a fully boxed frame, Tacoma is channel. Quality between my 16 Taco and 16 4R is drastically different also. The new taco is a POS

You sure you have a 16 Taco? Drivetrains are not even close to the same.

What srpuwya is saying is true. Those vehicles have historically had similar (or same) parts. I've had just as many issues with the 4Runner as Tacoma's. But overall, they've both been excellent.

Spending under 20k get a Sequoia. Spending over 20K start considering a LC. I saw a sweet 2013 LC a few months ago for 32k that was in great condition from a single owner. In some cases one can get quite a bit more vehicle for not a lot more.

Ok, quite a bit more vehicle---for what? For family road trip ventures? Give me the Sequoia all day long. For Moab trips? Sure, I'd take the LC. For 95% over the people out there, the Sequoia will do just fine. It'll be cheaper to acquire and to operate, and provide more room. Just different tools for different uses. You can't just say one is better.

I reference the earlier taco, not the 16+ Got rid of my 16 taco after 3500 miles, couldn't stand the 3.5 and 6 speed auto. IMO it's the death of the Tacoma. The 4R hands down is a much more solid truck and the build quality is much better.

Besides interior room (due to it being bigger in size and IRS), what else does sequoia have over LC? I did not include price because resale value negates that.

LC is far more capable, more safety features, more luxurious (quieter, better materials, better leather, better stereo, etc), stronger frame, engineer for longer life, and better pedigree.

First, price is a factor. Even resale, LC is ~40% higher than the Sequoia.
Other advantages. Like I said, it’s a better everyday vehicle compared to the LC. Besides the much larger room, it’ll provide a better ride due to IRS. Still retains pretty good off road capability with its 10” ground clearance (and do note LC is 8.9”). It’ll get you to every trailhead just fine. Another thing (for me) is the option for second row captain chairs. If you’ve got kids or need the use of that third row, this is huge, IMO. No flipping up the seat to gain access.

You guys keep bringing up “better” and “more capable.” Why is this even in the equation here? The guy wanted to get a Sequoia to replace his MINIVAN. Why does it matter whether the rig can get through Hells Gate or Metal Bender? Longer life and stronger frame? My LC at 160k was running fine but it had its issues. My friend’s Sequoia at similar mileage was doing just fine as well. We’re not talking taking it through the rigors of an overseas expedition. 99% of these vehicles will be used to take kids around and maybe a few dirt road campouts in between. Either will do this just fine.

I don’t have either vehicle. But if I were the OP, I’d be shaking my head at all these “features” being brought up that is of no relevance. Might as well bring up the fact Slee and many other AM companies make full skids, dual swing rear bumper, and snorkel for the LC, and not Sequoia.

This ... exactly.

The price can be considered a factor for a comparison of buying new. Initial price is 20k more and it never gains that back over depreciation. Personally for me the 10k lon-term cost differential would be worth getting the LC and sacrificing the room for the engineering and build of the LC. Best bet on either is really a lightly used model and the depreciation makes the LC costs no more than the Sequoia.

I can see for many how the extra 10" of wheelbase on the Sequioa might be a benefit for those that are towing frequently (say a travel trailer), because even with more tow rating, the LC wheelbase is more SUV and the Sequoia is more full size truck.

It is all really as personal use case on these two excellent vehicles.

You LC fanboys should re-read the OP. ^^

Thanks to all who replied. My father has a first gen Sequoia and my son has a 3rd gen 4runner, and, we've spent a lot of time noticing 2nd gen sequoias on the road. With that being said, we had no idea just how much we would appreciate it in person. This used '14 with 36K had a far superior ride than a brand new Tahoe and/or suburban. The fit & finish on this 4 year old Sequoia was in a league of it's own compared to brand new Ford & GM SUV's. Needless to say, we took it home so the 4Runner now has a stable mate it can be proud of!

You should also re-read post #8 ^^. It's done/done.

It is bigger by virtual of its bigger size and IRS. If it was the same size, then i will give it more credit. It is like a foot longer than TLC!

For same year and mileage, i see TLC being sold at significantly higher prices than Sequoia.

Better ride? I don’t know about that. I drove both and felt TLC was more comfy and pretty decent handling (thanks to KDSS). Quieter ride (road & wind) too...probably due to thicker glass and more sound insulation. Leather inside is same as top Lexus (semi-aniline).

10” ground clearance is bogus, right? It is ONLY down the middle because it does not have any low-hanging axle pumpkin. This is offset by far better articulation of the solid axle and more articulation on IFS on the TLC.

How about towing? TLC tows more and likely will do better over the long haul to to solid axle.

You’re right...some of TLC features are not needed by average folks. But then again, 99% of folks should buy a Sienna/Odyssey instead of SUV. If that is the case, then we should not even talk about off-road anything. I made through the mountains of CO with my Sienna in fairly bad weather...isn’t that good enough for 99% of folks?

The point is that TLC does offer significantly more luxury and tools than Sequoia. If you don’t need luxury or tools of TLC, then Sequoia is fine ride.
