Serpentine Belt Replacement 04 V-6

Here's the diagram I believe was previously posted. It should be the same as the one under the hood.

Thank you very much jharris2, your diagram was a great help. It showed me which one was the automatic tensioner. I was able to install the belt within 20 minutes. Thanks, again.
 
My belt's been squeaking for a few months now when it's cold and wet and then I realized... I haven't replaced the serpentine belt since I bought my '03 back IN '03! I guess next time I should change my belt before the 80k mile mark? ;) Surprisingly, the old one still looks to be in pretty good shape!

Even if it broke the worst thing that would have happened would be a tow to a shop and an overpriced repair. The water pump would have stopped along with the power steering pump, alternator, A/C compressor. No harm done unless you were to continue driving and let it over heat. No Timing involved.

I thought the 4th gen V6 had a timing belt?? and not a chain?

No, definitely a timing chain on all 4th gen V6 4Runners.

I believe the V8 4Runners have always had timing belts.
 
My stealership was wrong about my 06 V6 then ....... When I bought it they said the 6 banger had a belt I should replace at 90,000 miles. (And I do about 30 to 35K per year)

All Toyota 4.7L V-8s have Timing belts weather it is in a Tundra, 4Runner, Sequoia, Land Crusier, and the Lexus SUVs. It has had a belt since it was introduced.

That new 381hp 5.7 L Tundra engine has a chain. Finally Toyota finally.

Even my 2003 Camry with smaller 2.4L 4-banger, has a timing chain.

I am 400 miles away from the scheduled timing belt replacement on my 4runner. I will wait out the winter and replace it when it is warm outside (late Spring or early Summer)
 
Interesting post "grease". One thing I thought was very interesting, since I haven't looked at a V8 4Runner, was the diagram doesn't show any fan pulley. Does the V8 have an electric radiator fan instead of a belt drive one?
 
Well as it turns out, in the diagram above the part labeled Idler No. 1 is an error in the factory service manual. Idler No. 1 is the viscous coupled fan.

There is no electric fan on the V8 engine. I like these viscous fans as they are far more reliable than an electric fan. Plus the viscous fan is variable speed so there are no worries about losing fuel mileage. No fan motor to go bad and no fan relay to go bust. I currently have 2 vehicles with electric and 2 with viscous fans.

The one thing that I can not find is the water pump pulley. Could the fan pulley be the water pump pulley? I can not see well enough outside in the dark and the service manual is not clear about it.

I checked the manual, and you are right, the item marked Idler No. 1, is the viscous coupler for the fan, which is mounted on the water pump. Which is the usual method for mounting the cooling fan on an engine. Not the first, and I am sure not the last 'typo' we will find in the manuals.
 
v6 2004

Is this the same for the 2004 model? I have the high pitched sound. Pep boys says i need to replace the belt and tensioner. I have only 29k miles so would this be covered under warantee? If not, is it an easy job and how much is a tensioner? Where would I get it?

Should be covered by warranty.
