Does everyone go to their dealership for the 10K services? Mine run about 185 and I wonder if its necessary or can I just go get an oil change at a local shop?

You should be okay going to a trusty independent mechanic to have your oil changed instead of the dealership. Personally speaking though, I would probably bring my own oil and filter and pay the shop for the labor, just so I know exactly what's going to be put in by the mechanic. Genuine Toyota 0w20 synthetic and filters are a great choice from what I've heard.

I don't ever take my trucks ('07 Tacoma, '12 Tacoma, 13T4r) back to the dealership for service. Dealership is like any other automotive service place - you've got to look around to find someone you can trust. I think my dealership does provide good service, they are just too far away (I live in BFE!). Couple of local places provide good service for me.

Sounds like a rip off to me...
I only go to the dealership to buy the oem oil filters. I don't trust them for anything else.
I wait for Mobil 1 0w-20 oil to go on sale in autozone every other month. ($32 bucks for 5quarts and a oil filter)... The. I do it myself...
I then return the oil filter they sell me because I use oem only...

Are there not inspections and greasing of axle components at the 10k mark? I don't know how much they could charge to kick a tire though.. I guess $185..
They also have to cover the complementary paint swirls, I mean car wash.

A lot of service writers pepper the work order with useless stuff like additives they charge a lot for. Most people fall for it. If you're going that route, learn the words "factory-specified service only" - they like to shout it out to make you feel stupid when you say that.
Toyota Express Lane service covers the basics needed for under $40 in most places - tire rotation and oil change. Dealers never lube drive shafts, check tire pressure, or top up the windshield washer, no matter how much you pay them. Drop your rear right tire to 25 psi and see.

Probably referring to 10k intervals beyond the two freebies we get.
Mine will be due in a month or so for the first 10k service. I'll be going in well informed thanks to this forum. I do like my dealer a lot tho, but my first real service will tell me something about how our relationship shapes up. They are the only Toyota dealer in town.

Part of the expense is the oil, the oil is expensive, I believe its in the $9-10 range for a bottle of 0W-20 at customer cost and the Dual VVTi 1GR-FE's take close to 7qts of oil. You're looking at about $70 just in oil, plus they charge something like $130-150 per hour at most dealerships and a 5k, 10k, 15k, ect "Minor Service" (Basically Oil Change, Tire Rotation, Brake Inspection, Multi-Point Inspection) is roughly .8hrs of labor. The issue we are having is that parent companies (AutoNation and Toyota being our dealerships partners) send out these coupons for like $30 5k services and many dealerships are forced to either eat the difference or some cheat and use bulk/non-spec oil to save money which is bad JuJu (an unlikely example, but I have heard horror stories in my career and on this forum); as was stated earlier dealerships are like any other shop, you need to find one that you can trust.
I'm a little wary of Mobil One these days because I am hearing more and more how their forumulation is no longer up to par with what they are advertising. But Toyota is nice unlike some brands, as long as it meets or exceeds SAE 0W-20 and API SL ratings you can run what ever you want in terms of oil.

I always tell my friends that new car dealers are for warranty service, recalls and in our case, 1 or 2 Toyota Care oil changes only.
After that, I don't expect to see them ever again, unless there is some weird high-tech electronic thing that my independent can't figure out. Fortunately, I live in Los Angeles and have my choice of highly regarded, independent Toyota specialists, most of whom have many more years of experience than the average "plug 'er into the computer?" youngster in the new car dealer service department. If I want to speak with the owner, he's right there.
