Should I buy a 2010 4R Ltd needing throttle body replacement?

I am looking at getting into 4 wheeling and buying a 4Runner. It would predominantly be my wife's car and used for hauling the kids around town.
Found a 2010 4R Ltd and when checking out the vehicle, the throttle body issue described here and here happened to me.
The car was in idle while I went through my checklist. Checking the audio and nav system when the car stuttered and flashed the warning lights (check engine, 4Lo and slip control deactivated). The story developed pretty much like OKKI described in his post.
The dealer (Volvo & BMW) put me in touch with the service advisor at Toyota, who told me about the throttle motor needing replacement. No more warranty :happens:
Now, when i asked about history codes his response was that there are non.
Any advice whether that is scary or good?
:thanks:

I'm not going to make a recommendation either way, but if you do decide to purchase it, negotiate the repair into the purchase that way you don't have to purchase it if that's not what the issue was.

The only way I would buy it is by having the seller replace it first. They can do it themselves or have the Toyota garage do it. If it fixes it, great. Buy it. If not, then keep looking. This way you don't have to worry about the repair or the price of the repair.

I am confused, how many milese are on this vehicle? It should still be under factory powertrain warranty. I would make it clear to the seller to either remove the cost of the repair from the sales price or get it fixed before selling, period.

What he said ^. I would let the dealer have it completed rather than you screw around with it after the purchase.

Why are you stuck on this 4Runner? Or are you? There must be another out there somewhere that doesn't have a problem with it.

Who is "his" you refer to above? The Toyota SM? Seems to me this 4R should have stored fault codes.

How many miles are on this vehicle?

I'd have no problem buying this, assuming all else is to your liking. I would not have this repair done outside a Toyota dealer, nor would I accept it as is for a discount. It should be fixed, by Toyota, before buying. And, I'd sure take an extensive drive before accepting delivery.

I wouldn't have a problem buying it if they replaced the throttle body. As stated, the ECU will store the past DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) until they are cleared with Toyota's Techstream software. Some regulator OBDII scanners can clear the immediate code but as far
as I know only Techstream can clear them from the memory in the ECU.

I see you are in N.Texas and you can run it by me this weekend if it's available and I can scan the ECU as I have the Techstream software. Or you can stop by and borrow my laptop and cable with Techstream for the weekend as I work nights just south of Denton at Alliance Airport. It's very user friendly and simple to use.

There is a TSB out for it as you probably read and the new throttle bodies should be good to go. I'd bet that's the reason somebody traded it in as it seems to be an intermittent problem but the codes should be stored in the history and even gives dates and times it threw all DTC's and faults since the truck was new.......unless they were purposely cleared.

Been discussed to death in a previous thread that the Throttle Body is NOT covered under the factory 60k powertrain warranty, just the 3yr/36k mile warranty.

Thanks harper7!
That's what I suspected, there should be additional DTCs unless they were actively erased. Which begs the question, why do you erase them?
I'll ask one more time!

Newf4R, I will certainly walk away from that particular 4R if I have doubts that it is OK. Have enough time to find another one that fits the bill.
This particular car has all the features I am looking for 3rd row seat and permanent 4WD with locking center diff. Most 4Rs 'round here are actually RWD. And only a few have a 3rd row.

That's just wrong... I didn't even know it wasn't covered under the powertrain warranty (never really asked to be honest), but it should be as it is an integral part of the SFI/Engine...

Well best of luck to you, dealer should be responsible for delivering you a functioning vehicle (assuming this isn't being sold as a "as is" vehicle.)

Ahh I see! Way up north here it seems like Ltd's are 10 to 1 SR5's & TE's. The full-time 4wd is probably the reason why. That being said, there are No used 4Runners for sale. People hold on to these things forever, and dealers usually have a waiting list for used ones... along with Tacomas.

Like Philsey said, I wouldn't Not buy it because of this, just work a deal to have the dealer run it through Toyota for repairs before you take ownership. Maybe they'll want a deposit on it before they do, but that's not so bad. Strike a deal and make it official, but only if they agree to have Toyota fix it. Good luck!

This got me curious so I did some digging in our factory warranty booklet to see if there are any other ways of having Toyota honor the TB repair/replacement under warranty.

Now if I am understanding the terms correctly, it appears that for those of us whom are covered under the "California Emissions Control Warranty", we just might be able to get a bit more coverage past the standard 3yr/36k miles warranty period. It seems like any vehicles that are sold, registered and operated in CA(obviously), AZ, CT, NJ, OR, PA, RI, VT or WA just might fall under this clause. Below are the portions of the warranty booklet that I am interpreting this from.

Page 22 states:

"Vehicles equipped with a California
Certified Emission Control System that
are sold, registered and operated in
California or any state that adopts
California emission warranty provisions
are covered by this warranty.
Currently,
Arizona, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland,
Massachusetts, New Jersey, Oregon,
Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont
and Washington are the other states to
which this warranty applies."

Page 23 states:

"For seven years or 70,000 miles,
whichever occurs first:
If an emissions-related part listed
on page 24 is defective, the part
will be repaired or replaced by
Toyota.
This is your LONG-TERM
Emission Control System DEFECT
WARRANTY."

Page 24 states:

"PARTS LIST: LONG-TERM
EMISSION DEFECT
WARRANTY
The parts listed here are covered for seven
years or 70,000 miles from the vehicle’s
in-service date, whichever occurs first.

• A/C tube and accessory (cabin)
O-Ring
• Compressor
• Condenser
• Front evaporator
• Front evaporator O-Ring
• Front expansion valve no. 1
Air/Fuel Metering System
• Engine control computer (engine
control module)
• Fuel pump
• Throttle body
Air Induction System

• Exhaust front pipe no. 2
• Exhaust manifold (including manifold

Evaporative Control System

So...if anyone else is bored would you mind reading over these sections of the booklet and see if you get the same gist as me?

Hopefully I am reading it correctly because this would be great for those of you guys that qualify under this!

The story continues =;-)

Talked to the service advisor who handled the car for the first owner. This service advisor told me that they typically delete the history codes when servicing the car. They read the codes, delete them and run the car through its paces to see if the codes show up again.
Kinda makes sense!

Good find Eddie! Unfortunately Texas isn't one of them .But should help members in those states if they have a problem with it.

Are they going to replace it then?

It does kind of makes sense for them as they don't want to possibly kill a sale if someone like me came up and ran the history with my laptop :der:
Not in your case but also protects them from possible lemon laws by wiping the memory every time.

I keep mine as it gives you an option to save to a folder rather then permenantly delete them. You would be surprised on all the little glitches here and there that are recorded over the years. Had a bunch for running headers with an o2 Sim that were on there.
