Should I stay or should I go?

2000 Base model 2wd. 4 cyl. I've owned it 6 months, paid $3900 for it and have another $1K in to it so far. Seemed like a fair deal - paint ind interior look good, air works, 184K miles. Ran OK - not like the 6 in my old '99 Limited but not too bad for a little 4 with big tires. The truck had a recent valve job done before I bought it, which seemed like a plus at the time.

It wasn't. I just found out that whoever did the valve job botched the job and it needs another one along with will most likely be a new head. $2500 or thereabouts.

I'm not sure the truck is worth fixing. A truck like mine is not worth anything like $8k even with a spiffy new valve job. If it were 4WD 6 cyl maybe, but not a 2 WD 4 cyl. By the time I sort out the front end and suspension issues I'll have $10K in this thing and it's still a 16 year old 2 WD truck with a dicey radiator and holes in the carpet, and there is no guarantee the new valve job will last any longer then the one before.

But what to do with it? It's worth about a $grand as junk, or someone with skillz might want to buy it and do the engine work, but as it sits I see getting anything close to $2K for it as a stretch even if it a rust free CA car. I suppose I could trade it in somewhere on something else but I really don't want a car payment and I'd be lucky to get $2500 as a trade even on a new one. The idea behind buying it was to save $, not to spend it. Maybe I should donate it to public radio for the tax writeoff.

Maybe I should fix it and see if I can drive the value out of it. Lots of people get 300K miles out of their trucks, but those are all 6 cyls. The lack of a timing belt in the 4s does not offset the gawdawful head design, and the 300K drivers never tell us how much money and time they had to invest to get there.

But I like it. I like driving it even as it turns out I don't like working on it much, partly because everything is 2X s difficult as it should be and the parts cost a fortune. I wrench on my Ford trucks and it's no big deal, but this thing? Wow. I don't know how you guys do it.

So junk it? Fix it? Swap it on a 4x4? Cut the top off of it and park it in the yard as a flower box?

I'd junk it. Folks here have a weird attachment to these things but honestly they are to cheap and plentiful to waste money rebuilding or replacing engines and transmissions. I paid $3700 for mine and have a $1000 into it like you. It leaks oil, has low compression, and is sluggish as hell. For a $1000 I can get a new used motor but that's a third the cost of the vehicle and there's no guarantee it's going to work as many members have found out. I don't know your financial situation but with mine I'll junk it long before I drop the money on a new engine or trans. It's just not worth it.

Mechanic is a Toyota guy and gives the chance of the head surviving as about 50/50. Given my recent history with the thing Id consider myself fortunate if the rings are any good.

My mechanic put a new head my old 5vzfe before I put in a new motor and all said and done it was about $800

Did your mechanic check for a cracked exhaust manifold? The 3rz does have a bad stock manifold that will fry valves as quickly as you put them in.

Not sure about the poor head design. Then again I've never messed with mine. I just check the valves every 30k and that's about it. Every now and then I need a new shim.

If you can fix a ford, the 3RZ should be a walk in the park, anybody charging you 2800 is straight up ripping you off, I was quoted 600-700$ for a refurbished head that was ready to be dropped right on, and it's definitely not a 2k$ job. The only real flaw in the head design on the 3RZ is the lack of material between the spark plug holes and valves on the inside, other than that it's a bulletproof motor.

I'd say it sounds like you're over it, list it on craigslist, I'm sure someone will come along and give you more than the scrapyard.

If you had a reputable mechanic do the work. Tell them to nut up and either redo the work properly. Or pay to have it redone.

So I decided to stay.

Yotamasters did a very good job of repairing it and it now runs like new. Turned out it did not need a head and the cost wasn't all that bad.

The reason I decided to fix it is that no matter how many replacement trucks I looked at I could not find anything in the <$10K range that I liked driving as much as I do this goofy little 4cyl 2wd truck. It's just the right size, I like the way it handles, I fit in it (6'2 and somewhere north of 200#), and the dogs fit in the back. I'm getting 21 MPG combined since the work was done.

The new Weathertech mat set should arrive this week and I have my eye on a new floor mounted phone holder...

I agree with you on the sub $10k comment and sporty feel of a 3rd gen. I could never mentally handle going from a 3.4 to a 2.7(?), but that's coming from a guy who had a '94 Toyota p/u with a gutless 22re and a 93 Toyota p/u with a 3.0 (practically just as gutless).

One of the first things I did when I got into my '00 back in August was a full set of Weathertechs, shortly after that I picked up a in dash phone mount (Panavise bracket and Ram mount). For a DD, those two things have greatly upped my enjoyment in my 4Runner.

Congrats on the decision, I think you made the right one!
