should I switch from stock to k&n air filter?

I'm nearing 30k on my 08 SR5 V6 and am planning on changing the stock air filter. I was wondering if I should spend the extra cash and put in a k&n air filter instead of replacing it with another stock toyota filter. The k&n is about $60. Is the k&n worth switching to? It supposedly is less restrictive thus theoretically improving engine performance. Its also washable. Just wondering what others recommend. Thanks

I'd stay with the OEM (stock) air filter. Here are some articles about why stock filters are good for our 4Runners.

Just remember that the k&n will not beat the filtration of a stock paper filter. IMO, i'd rather lose a couple HP and have a cleaner engine.

I use to be into the whole K&N thing, but have kept the stock, paper style filters in my last few vehicles. They do flow a bit more air, but I wonder about how fine the filtration is when you have to use a dust filter over the top of it in dusty environments. I also got tired of washing, drying, and re-oiling them. I've heard much better things about the dry performance filters like the AFE, Amsoil, and another I can't remember the name of.

Lots of people use the K&N filters and like them so maybe I'm just getting lazy! Definitely do some research though, before you decide... there's a lot of information out there supporting both the pros and cons.

K&N claim..is that they allow more air in...this makes the vehicle breath better.

The problem is they do this with LESS filtering. For every gallon of gas you burn...you also consume 10,000 gallons of air. I'd want the air as clean as possible.

I would definitely say NO to K&N oiled filters, but if you would like to have cleanable, less restrictive, dry aftermarket filter then I would recommend to take a look at: AFE Pro-Dry S Air filter.

First, I'm not a big fan of K&N; just too much bad folklore.

Second, I'm running the TRD CAI and I barely noticed any power gain but it DOES sound mean.

I have an AFE ProDry S filter as somebody mentioned above. I like the fact that I can just pull it out and wash it whenever I want. Since they don't filter as well as an OEM filter, I'll simply clean it more often (usually once a year, I don't encounter much dust).

As others have stated nothing beats an OEM filter.
