Should we prune old posts to help site run smoother/faster?

Hey all, just looking for some feedback on this. Essentially what I'm asking is if a thread hasn't had any activity (new posts) in X number of years, should the entire old thread be pruned? Note that IF we decide to do some sort of pruning like this you would want to post a new post in any old stale threads you really like in order to save it (e.g., I'll have to make sure I find the old infamous hot babes thread and unlock it temporarily in order to add a new post to make it fresh )

I'm thinking no old posts should be pruned. Now that we finally have a search function that works, the more information the better, no matter how obscure the post could be, it might be beneficial to someone.

Without understanding the benefits of pruning more I am inclined to say "no".

IMHO,
1) All the good work you, Thai and others have done in the early days would be lost. (Not all but a lot)

2) There's a whole new crop of owners coming on board as the 4th gen was produced in big numbers (compared with an FJC or others) and the 03-05's are getting affordable.

3) We finally have a search that works! If you don't want to see all the old stuff the user can limit the search by date. I am hopeful we may start seeing less "will 265/75/16's or 265/70/17's fit?" Not that I mind but with a functional search we should let it go a while and see what happens.

4) If you went and found a sweet 86.5 Turbo 4Runner you'd like to be able to go back on TTORA and YotaTech and read about it. It won't be long before the first 4 gens fall into that scenario.

5) I'm sure I can think of more... Other than less gigs on a server and slightly faster searches I can't think of a reason to prune.

If it's a money thing for the storage I'll bet you could get more than enough for 5 or 10 years via voluntary donations.

i would at least give it a while to see what old posts may be revived now that the search works.

There are very little benefit in pruning posts. Most forum software allow the admin to automatically move older posts (or one that meet certain criteria) into a separate database for archival purposed.

I vote for keeping old threads intact. I've learned a lot by searching old threads.

I definitely want to see the Hot Babes thread!

I'm curious about the people voting to prune, what's your reason? Me personally i cannot think of any reason why old posts should be pruned, just because there old posts doesn't mean they aren't valuable.

I say no to removing old posts that have multiple replies.

BUT, I say yes to removing threads that have zero replies and are more than 1 year old, and I say yes to removing classified adds that are more than 6 months old.

Also, is there any point in keeping members registered that have zero posts and have not visited the site in more than 2 years? I say delete them and free up up the user names and help get a better picture of the actual site membership. We all know that 22198 members (as currently shown in the member list) is a useless number...

no, i agree now that the search works leave it as is. theres always stuff to learn about our rigs even if your not new to forum. glad you asked opinions before hand.

Over the months that I have been on this forum, I have learned so much more about my rig and about cars in general. Lots of valuable stuff that anyone could find by searching through the older posts.

However I really do appreciate that you asked for our opinions.

I would have to say no, I'm sure there are some threads out there with good information that people still look at from time to time and not post in. What you should do is delete all members that haven't been active in like 2 years, those with 0 posts.. I've heard of forums doing that.
