Side exhaust "in" a steel bumper

Hey everyone,

Ive done some google searching and found this:

The picture shows an exhaust coming out of the side of a steel rear bumper. I found this idea interesting since we complain about the exhaust smell of the straight back pipes and the clearance of the pipe itself.

This seems to solve both issues while leaving a clean look (I dont like the picture design)

What are your thoughts? Have you seen one on a 4Runner?

I routed my exhaust to the side (like some others have) and I still get the exhaust smell with the rear window down. I think it reduced the exhaust smell a little but definately did not eliminate it.

This was an idea when building my bumper. I decided against it mainly because I didn't want to mess with the exhaust if I ever had to pull my bumper off. On the flip side, how often does one really need to pull their bumper off? It also wouldn't be too much trouble to just set the pipe back a bit so it isn't physically "in" the bumper, but rather just inside of it.

However; I also wonder if you would become victim to the rice-burner effect, coating the area of the bumper surrounding the exhaust in carbon. Again, maybe not too big of a deal if it's a black bumper...

i have mine routed up and over the frame rail and turned down between the frame and bumper cover. dont really have the sulfur smell any more and i dont hit my exhaust any more either.

it achieves the same thing you want with out having to cut a 3"+ hole in the bumper.

Not to sure you could run it into a bumper thru/side.
The body is in the way, unless your metal bumper hangs way down past the frame.

[MENTION=108235]CruzadoBlanco[/MENTION], this is similar to my idea however im not looking to dump down since this rig is also my sleeping qtrs and sometimes i run the vehicle.

Have you never pulled the bumper cover off? Then you would see what I am talking about. The body hangs down on the sides. Even if you route it over the frame. Would need a 2+" body lift.

I had mine kicked out to the side a few years ago. It does stop most of the exhaust smell unless your full pedal down. The turn down option would actually be really nice for driving with the window down. I had my old Audi done this way and noticed on cold mornings that it pushed the exhaust down and away from the vehicle, not just down. I have often contemplated having a turn down end added to my existing exhaust.
