Simple sound system for my 06

Hey guys,

I just got an 06 SE V6....and the factory sound system has got to go. I have the Non-JBL system. I am looking for a simple setup.

To give you an idea of what I mean by simple:

I am coming from a 1999 Jeep Cherokee Sport. I replaced the head unit (1.5 HU space...WHY!?!) with an Alpine CDE102 and one of the new (at the time) Alpine KPT-445 amp. Got a generic wire harness to splice the new wires with and hook up to the existing HU connection that came with the Jeep and a face plate to fit the stereo in the 1.5 HU space. I replaced all four speakers with Infinity Reference 6022i Speakers. The speakers in the sound bar in back were actually supposed to be 5.25in speakers but the 6.5in still fit while drilling new holes in the plastic to mount them. I used the existing speaker wires to connect the speakers up. Had to replace a little bit of speaker wire in the driver's door panel. Guess it got more wear from opening and closing the door more often than the others.

That was it. No crazy subs in back or 500 watt amps. And it is plenty for me. Like driving down the highway at 70-80 mph with the windows rolled down and the sound system only at volume 18 out of 30 and it was still super loud...to me.

So yeah, that is what I am looking for. The only differences i see with my new 4runner is I now have controls on my steering wheel (FINALLY), Tweeters in the front door panels and the speakers in the front door panels are 6x9 instead of 6.5in.

Right now I have these components I am looking at:

Head Unit: Pioneer AVH-P3300BT
Head Unit Face Plate: ???
Amp: Alpine KTP-445 (like I said...it was plenty loud for me)
Wire Harness: ???
Steering Wheel Adapter: Metra Axxess ASWC
Tweeters: ???
Speaker Adapters for 6x9 to 6.5in: Scosche SAT69 4-Runner Speaker Adapter for 2003 Toyota
Speakers: Infinity Reference 6032cf 6.5-Inch

So I am missing a Face Plate, Wire Harness and tweeters. Since I am only getting a four-channel amp, I was considering just leaving the tweeters out and using the integrated tweeters in the Infinities. Also, is there enough room behind the Head Unit to stuff the alpine amp in? The amp is about the size of a burrito.

I have a few questions as far as installing this stuff....namely the wheel control adapter but right now I just wanted to make sure I had all the necessary components.

The only experience I have in car audio is the system I mentioned for my jeep, so you will have to bare with me if I ask something that might seem straight forward.

Consider me one who is also curious about the steering wheel controls. I have the factory controls as well and am curious if they can also control a new head unit or not. They're basically holding me back from upgrading because they're so nice to have and wouldn't want to throw another control next to them or anything either.

Also, I would like an opinion about the tweeters. I would hate to just have these speakers grilles with nothing in them for the tweeters. Could I have the four speakers (two in the front and two in the back seats) with the two tweeters for a total of six speakers and still be OK with the KTP-445? Would it just play like the tweeters and speakers up front were on two channels? Like an integrated tweeter/speaker that I was thinking about doing? Or would I need an Amp that has 6-channels?

Stanelybb50, I will let you know how it goes once I know I have everything I need and install it. I will go on and tell you, from the research I have done, the Metra Axxess ASWC is supposed to be superior to the PAC SWI.

pac audio makes an adaptor to use the factory steering wheel controlls with your aftermarket radio, either a swips or swijack depending on the aftermarket radio brand, most all aftermarket head units aside from the most entry level units has the plug to allow conection of the adaptor for the controlls.

on a toyota you are ok with the metra or pac piece, the only cars the pac is tempermental on are new lan system general motors cars.

Say I put the amp under the passenger's seat and ran the power cable from the battery through the firewall, under the door seal trim panel on the drivers side, under the drivers seat and center console and finally to the amp under the passenger's seat. From the how tos, you are not supposed to run the signal cables from the head unit or speaker wires near the amp's power cable or you will get interference. The signal cables are easy. I will just run them behind the glove box, under the passenger's door seal trim panel and finally to the amp. The speakers on the passenger's side of the 4Runner are also easy. Now the speakers on the drivers side of the 4Runner is where I don't understand what to do. If the power cable wasn't under the driver's seat, I would run the speaker wires through there but since the power cable is in that location, do I have to run those speaker wires all the way around the vehicle thus causing me to take apart more panels to run the wires through? And even then, the speaker wires for the driver's speaker will get pretty close to the amp's power cable either way? Suggestions?

Also, how does this setup look:

it is WAY easier and better to run the power wire accross the car before you come through the firewall. also it doesnt matter if your speaker wires just the signal from the deck to the amp. i would run the power down the puter edge of the car and the rca cables under the center console to the amp location. also do you have a jbl system? if so that wire harness wont plug in there is a different harness for the jbl system but if you have that id just skip the harness since its about 100.00 and designed to keep the jbl amp wich you wont be using anyway. since all your speakers are going o be running off your new amp all youll need to hook up is power ground and steering wheel controlls and the steering controlls arent in any aftermarket wire harness anyway.

sorry forgot a few things, yes there is plenty of room in the door for those speakers, and the seats are easy to take out just kinda heavy with the motors, remember to place the amp under the seat while it is still in the car that way when you pull the seat youl know where the amp fits without having to put the seat back in untill your done
there are not pre made tweeter adaptors you can make some with a piece of metal backstrap and tin snips in a few minutes. pretty much any amp power kit will work as long as it is at least 8awg power wire dont buy the kit that comes with the rca cables because they would be way too long and that is bad. the rca is where it is important to get a quality cable that is long enough but not so long that youll have a bunch coiled up. you wont need long ones for my tundra crew max the amps are under the front seats and my rca cables are only 3.3 feet long and there is still a little extra. stinger makes a good rca cable that doesnt cost much.

Are you saying I do not need a wire harness period?

I know I won't be using the factory speaker wires now, but I still need power and I didn't want to cut up the factory connection. So I figured I would get the wire harness and splice only the connections I need. In this case, I guess it would just be the power and ground cables.

What do you mean by run the amp power cable across the car and through the puter edge of the car? Instead of coming through the driver's side, come through the passenger's side of the firewall?

Alright, I got started but I ran into a snag.

I measured out what I had to work with under the passenger seat but I failed to notice the vent when I was picking an amp. The first picture shows where I would have put the amp. The second picture shows the vent that would be covered up.

My plan was to run all the wires through the flap in the carpet (see third pic of what I mean), under the center console (why I took it out) and to the head unit. I would tie the speaker wires into the wire harness I got so I could use the factory speaker wires instead of running speaker wires all throughout the 4Runner.

I wanted to go this route because I didn't want an amp laying in the back. I think this way would look good. It is just that vent under the seat that is in the way.

I think my best option would be to return the amp to amazon and look for a smaller amp that could fit on top of the vent without blocking it. See fourth pic of what I mean.

What do you guys think?

Also what is this third connection I took out from the stock head unit? See fifth pic for what I mean.

Edit: Measured that spot for a smaller amp. It would need to be no more than 6.5 in wide.

Edit Edit: hmmm....maybe instead of yanking out the vent, I could extend the ducting some how. I only need about 2.5 to 3 in more. Any suggestions on how do to do that?

They are plug and play and you get 160 or 200 watts depending on which HU you go with.My last 4Runner, I went with the 1809 and upgraded the speakers.Total cost for everything including having Bestbuy put in the speakers was under $300 and it sounded fantastic.

How'd that sound bass-wise and on the freeway with the windows down?

I have the base SR5 radio in my '06 and it sounds great around town, but s****y on the freeway.

And can I still run the front door tweeters with the Scion HU?

Sounds like an excellent suggestion to the op, just curious on those questions.

mount the amp straight up and down with the truck, and cut 2 2x2 squares out of 3/4 inch mdf and use that as legs on the bottom part of the amp that is facing the rear, this will create the clearance for the vent to blow air.
i think if u mount the amp facing left and right, the seats will barley fit i think.

Thanks for the replies. I thought about scion unit but I wanted the dvd screen.

Out of the options that I have found just by googling:

1. Simply lay the amp on top of the vent and not worry about it
2. Pull the vent out and block the air flow somehow
3. Put spacers under the amp to allow the air to pass under it like riceandpho suggested

I will go the spacer route. I'll run by home depot and see if I can get a good piece of MDF board and make something.

Yeah I realize left to right will barely clear the seat. I been thinking about it and have changed my mind on that. I will run it length wise since I will have better access to the controls on the amp. I just was worried about ppl in the back seat kicking the connections. I will just have to tell anyone seating back there to be careful.

Right now, I am hooking everything up and going to hook back up the battery to make sure everything works.

I just picked up the Alpine premium hu . Trey99ek has one installed in his 4Runner.It has touch screen,nav and 200 watts.

Got a couple of questions about hooking up the axxess awsc steering wheel control adapter.

I got the instructions off the axxess interface website for my 4Runner. It says to connect the Red (12 volt) wire to a 12 volt accessory wire that turns on/off with the ignition.

Can I just connect both of the 12 volt ignition wires for the HU and awsc to the one that will be coming off the wire harness I got or do I need to look for another 12 volt wire to tap into?

Also, axxess's instructions say to connect pin 6 of the vehicles harness to ground. Do I just plug a wire in there and ground the other end?

just connect everything thru the harness, but remove all the extra fuses, i like to take all the fuse and use just the main stock fuse, i think its under the hood at 10 amp, and maybe theres another one under the steering. its a hassel if the radio blow a fuse and u will need to pull everything out just to change a fuse.

OK everything is hooked up and "working."

There are two problems I cannot figure out.

1. The tweeters are making a static kind of noise. Woofers sound fine.

2. I hooked up the axxess aswc to the wrong 3.5mm jack. No prob...hooked it up to the right one and it works now. But now the volume is super loud even on level 3. I know it is not right cause I was at volume 8 when I had it hooked up wrong and it sounded fine. So the aswc has increased the overall level of volume.

Any suggestions?
