Thanks for the photos. I had not thought of mounting it in that direction. I think it is too wide to fit width-wise under the seat. Does it not interfere with the feet of back seat passengers they way you have it?

Did you anchor it to the floor? Where did you tap into the speakers?

Well that was bulls#!t!!!

Was on my way to picking up a JL 13TW5 and the guy selling it at Craigslist sold it to someone else. I hate flaky people who sells stuff.

I guess I'm going to buy some rock sliders instead. And plan on buying these down the road.

It doesnt stick out as far as it looks. A I havent heard anyone complain about it taking up too much space. I havent really secured it yet. It comes with shitty mounting straps that you have to drill holes in the floor to use it, so I got some industrial velcro to use instead. I havent applied it yet but it doesnt really slide around. Also I tapped in behind the radio and routed wire through the center console and out the carpet.

Well I finished my install. For those of you that don't want to cut into the wires, you can do like I did and purchase these harnesses to plug into your existing harnesses and just do your crimp connections there.

****DO NOT USE THE REAR ONE AS IT WILL MAKE YOUR HEAD UNIT LIGHTS STOP FUNCTIONING WHEN THE HEADLIGHTS ARE ON****

I went through the firewall by simply running a cord through this easily replaceable grommet on the drivers side...

As far as placement...

Yes, I am still using the factor head unit and all stock speakers. The amplifier is built into the Kicker subwoofer and only powers the subwoofer (the power is run directly from the battery).

I suppose I didn't really NEED them, but I didn't want to cut any factory wires. So, I purchased a wire harness and a reverse wire harness so that I could plug one into the radio, and one into the wire harness that was originally plugged into the radio. Then I just made the appropriate connections with crimps to connect the two together along with adding the wiring for the Kicker.

Now, If I ever decide I want to take out the subwoofer, it is as simple as unplugging the harness contraption that I made and plugging the factory harness back into the radio.

Hope that makes sense...

My Kenwood unit arrived from Amazon ($149, $100 less than Crutchfield) yesterday. Planning to install this weekend. Can you or anybody tell me what the wire colors are for the front speakers on the stock head unit? Or where can I find it? My 4Runner's a 2004 but I'm guessing the colors are standard regardless of year. Or are the speaker wire colors an industry standard?

My quick search didn't turn up anything for 2003 or 2004 but I found some info for 2006 which is probably the same. Always test and double check before cutting or splicing wires though. Even though this is a 5th gen section I'll help you out. I don't mean to de-rail this thread.

It would be fine to tap into the rear speakers if you want to do cutting. What I was trying to say is that if you are going to use the harness kit, don't use the included harness for the rear speakers. Apparently there are several more pins in the factory harness that run the power for the backlight on the control buttons. If you use the rear speaker wire harness that comes in the package, your sub will work but the lights will not. I ended up just running it all of the main/power harness and it now works perfectly and is "plug and play".

I'm not sure if it's possible for folks that didn't get the premium audio upgrade but it does say it fits the following:

• 2015 Toyota 4Runner Limited 4.0L V6 - Gas
• 2015 Toyota 4Runner SR5 4.0L V6 - Gas
• 2015 Toyota 4Runner Trail 4.0L V6 - Gas
• 2014 Toyota 4Runner Limited 4.0L V6 - Gas

It might be a good option for a stealthier installation of an aftermarket subwoofer for the folks that don't want to put it under the seat.

Many have, in fact, thought about it, and several have actually done it. I saw a few fairly recent threads on their installs.

I'm not too tech savvy.. I've always thought a new head unit was required to run a subwoofer, which is how I've done it in all my past vehicles. You guys are installing them by just connecting to the speakers? How does that work?
Like I said, no electrical specialist here...if a hammer don't fix it, it's an electrical problem.. �� lol
