The key shown in the "back" view has all the remote buttons built into the head of the key rather than a separate fob - has that always been the case in Japan or is this a change we will get here?

Probably not. This feature was available in Japan for years and we didn't have it, so I think Toyota will leave this as is.

I like those new Optitron gauges, but I'm guessing it'll be on the Limited only (would be a good way to further differentiate it from the SR5 and Sport).

I don't fully understand the Japanese trim levels and how they align to the US models, but I did see the current orange-lit gauges on at least a couple.

Do you know or can you find out if any of the exterior trim changes (ie. grill, wheel openings) are also going on the 2006 4Runner? There is no info out yet over here on what the '06 Runner will look like. What I am thinking is that the Surf changes are all plastic parts with no sheet metal changes. That way even if the Runner and Surf are cosmetically different, then the metal parts are still common (from the same body tools and dies.) Then there is hope that we could retrofit Surf trim into the Runner body holes (ie. the light modules.)

As far as I know, it's Direct Injection, but not Common Rail. Maybe I'm wrong.

Maximum power is 125hp@3600rpm and maximun torque is 219lb-ft@2000rpm.


These figures seem small for the Toyota 1KD-FTV D4-D 3.0L engine. Do you have the smaller 2KD-FTV 2.5L engine? Actually, they seem to be the output of the export version of the older Toyota 3.0L 1KZ-TE engine.

The export version of the 1KD-FTV 3.0L D4-D has an output of 160hp@3400rpm and 253lb-ft@1400-3400rpm

edit: I just looked at the Toyota-Caribbean website and the 4Runner is indeed using the the older 1KZ-TE engine which is not a direct injection engine but uses high-pressure fuel rail system.

Not true, my Lexus 330 has it and I have a friend with a 300 that also has this type of key remote. I wonder if you can buy it from Lexus and make it work with the Runner?

Two-tone coloring are only V,
Maybe....I will consider, if it follows.(4R)

Thanks for the information. I think what you are saying is that since the Surf and 4Runner are produced on the same line the body metal will be identical. I'm hoping this is true so that I will be able to mount the Surf headlights and tail-lights into a 4Runner (because the sheet metal openings should be the same.)

"i.e." is an abbreviation for "id est" which means "that is" (or loosely "for example".) I used an on-line translator and got this:

I think what was meant was that the remote-on-the-key is not a new feature for the '06 Hilux Surf, so we can't assume that it is a new feature that will be found on the '06 4Runner .

I prefer the current key fob, personally.

After re-reading the messages, you are correct. I just wonder if someone has tried buying a Lexus key with remote to use on the Runner. The 330 is an inverted design (hard to explain, but basically the sides of the key is smooth). But some of the older one are just like Toyota keys.

It sure looks like the new headlights will fit in the 03-05 4runners. They just cut into the lower pannel a bit to give it a more tacoma-like front end. The question is if there are any wiring components that are different with the new headlights. If all is the same though, I think they would look awesome on my truck.

That's what I thought when I looked at them, same design, same size, only extends a little further down into the trim piece. The only difference probably would be the low-beam socket. Toyota uses H11 and H7 bulbs in its projector-style headlights. The only vehicle I can think of that still uses the 9006 bulbs is the LX470. I guess we'll have to wait and see what Toyota decides to do.

Since the DRL's don't seem to be down below anymore, I wonder how they are going to do them now?

I hope they didn't got back to the headlights at half power type of thing? I hate that, I would disable that before I even get it home.

Does anyone have any pics of the new instrument cluster?

I think I actually like the turn signals outside the cluster better, looks like they moved some of the warning lights around too.

and the trip meter switch I don't know if I like it down there either, espeically because that clear plastic is so easily scratched. I don't want anymore reasons to have my fingers near it (lol)

i'm sure you could just buy the little flat pieces (for the 06) under the headlights instead of cutting the ones you have
