Snorkel Help

Hey i have been looking around for a snorkel and really have had no luck in finding one.:smashputer: Please if you would post a link to one and for those that have one can you give me an estimate on the installation on one? I will have my mechanic do it for i have no idea where to even start on one. Thanks!

Yes, as far as I know. That is the kit everyone buys.

Someone should chime and support my theory though to be 100%. Only 99.9999% right now.
 
Yes that is the kit you would need. You'll also need the Tacoma intake tube that fits under the passenger fender coming from the bend off the airbox.
 
no one makes a snorkel for the 4runner, the tacoma one is as close as you are going to get. i know john(jmt2404) has a snorkel thats not a safari brand snorkel, but his is also for a tacoma. i would not have your mechanic do this, if you do not feel comfortable doing the job yourself, then take this to a body shop, as it deals with drilling through the fender. this will cause there to be bare metal and it should be covered with some sort of paint ect to keep the fender from rusting ect. if this was putting in a locker id say sure have your mechanic do it, but this is a snorkel, not very many mechanics have done this or seen it done, and if they "F" it up then you might have to pay a body shop to fix what he screwed up if he says sorry and hands you the keys... what im getting at is id rather have a body shop mess with body panels than my mechanic, just like id have my mechanic rebuild my motor before id let the body shop guy rebuild my motor...

really the job is not that hard, its pretty straight forward, and if you have some patience and some mechanical knowledge then you can do this yourself in a couple of hours tops. i think it took me like an hour from start to finish, that includes jacking up the truck and taking off the tire and painting the bear metal after drilling...

I second the ARB Safari one, looks the best in my opinion then some of the custom made ones, then again, props to the guys who do make their own! And also agree with the kid about taking it to a body shop, don't want to get ahead of yourself and screw something up. Post pics when you get yours! :)
 
you can buy one on ebay for a good price, search 'hilux snorkel' instead of 4runner snorkel.


or go custom. theres a number of people doing it. im working on my all carbon fiber snorkel still, will be a while though, lol! :guitar3:

Yeah I know, there is no way I'd ever pay that much for one unless I was just making a stupid amount of money... I paid $100 for mine and it cqme with the Tacoma tube and the big round prefilter for the top...
 
Soooooooo, can I ask the "maybe too obvious" question? Why are you adding a snorkel, do you really need it? cutting into the fender is a big commitment, and it means you can't go back without expensive body work.

You can re-position the intake snorkel without cutting through the fender and make it pretty resistant to ingress. Check this one out: re-routed to the cabin...

Not saying you should bring it into the cabin, but if you are smart about water crossings and keep a bow wave going, you should be able to go through water that is pretty deep (just watch the top gear bolivia special, that LC submerges its hood and still doesn't suck water). Are you really going to go beyond that? Also, are you going to be properly waterproofing the rest of the vehicle, like harnesses, connectors, the cabin, electric fan with shutoff, etc?



I vote that anyone asking for help to install a snorkel is required to post videos of them going balls deep into the drink. I feel like lots of people want snorkels because they look BA, but will never come close to needing it. I know I went through that phase, but my better judgement prevailed and I dropped the idea before hacking it apart...

I second.

For me I think it is a little too much, beyond even badass. But I feel the same way about carrying the Hi Lift around when it is not needed.

Agreed, and I'm debating buying a snorkel. I'm the black 4R at 5:30. Deep enough to justify a snorkel?

Balls deep?

I found some water in my air box afterwords. Not a lot, but there was water in there. I also had no idea I'd have to go this deep this day. I'd have preferred to have had a snorkel. Practice makes perfect too. I entered the water with to much speed.

And they are totally BA.

You do realize thy a snorkel isn't just for going "balls deep into the drink," right?

Moving the intake higher allows you to suck in cleaner air, as well as letting you go through water crossings. Hence why a lot of vehicles in Australia and ect have snorkels.

There are many advantages to snorkels, not just to go "balls deep."
 
I agree also, go with the ARB. Check out Sierra Expeditions they usually have good prices. Had one on my FJ and necessary or not I loved it!

Nice video, looks like a fun afternoon. I certainly would have reservations going through that last hazard without a snorkel but like you mentioned with the proper speed you would be alright.

I've looked into a snorkel before but did not want to cut into the fender for what is my daily driver. I live in a flood prone area and have been in situations where water was coming over my hood driving on a city road.

note the white 4runner with the proper bow wave vs the grey 4th gen that just guns it
