Yeah that's so not gonna happen by then, but its a thought. Car is more important for upgrades at this time, truck might get new tires before then though. What the lowest price we've seen for the snorkel? Haven't found one for under 400

I'm guessing having a window open would offer a means of escape if the truck sinks or rolls over. Differential pressure makes it near impossible to open a door or roll down a window if a vehicle does sink. (The Mythbusters did an excellent episode on that recently). Then again an open window would also make it more likely to fill up with water & sink so not surprised he had them closed.
 
Huh, never seen a snorkel face backwards like that. Makes sense though, less change water could splash in.

Snorkels are also used for dusty roads arnt they? Slightly cleaner air up higher
 
sounds to me like you want one, so buy one.
Ive really only encountered situations where a snorkel would be a good thing in central america, during rainy season....... not to say that there arent some real long, real deep and real watery spots around, but there isn't a perfect point break on the other side :)

and people tend to face snorkels backwards in DUSTY conditions, so that she isnt just inhaling dust, silt and dirt.
 
disclaimer: I am completely new to toyotas but a veteran of just about all kinds of off-roading. Im a veteran and a veteran of almost all manor of land/range rovers. My eperience has been that snorkels are not necessarilly needed for deep water crossings nearrly as much as they r needed for driving fast thru big puddles and the like. Landies and HMVEEs dont need snorkels to keep water ouyt of the air intake during fordings/crossings but to avoid the tendency of water to splash its way into the air filter when one hits a deep puddle at 50 MPH. Also, switching from a factory paper type air filter to a fram high flow filter pretty much negates the powerloss that one gets by adding a snorkel and its extra 3' of air travel distance. just my HO and my 2 pennies worth of info...

I'm a fan of the look. Years ago, I had a different 86'. Some friends and I decided to run a large stream from one section of wooded area, to another while crossing underneath a large interstate highway intersection. The culverts were tight, but had a few inches of clearance on each side. Once we started, we were committed. Luckily, my 4runner cut off at one point due to water in the distributor. I say luckily, because the front end had just dropped off, and water was over the hood. I got it drug out, and started wrenching. After a while we restarted, and was able to continue on to complete the foolish trek.
