Snow Tire Advice Needed for 2010 T4R S45

I've personally considered Blizzaks+steelies for my 4Runner for quite some time. Unfortunately/or lucky? because of the crazy deal from my T dealership I've got goodyear silent armor which is snow rated tire. However, I would not call it true snow tire. Compound and tread pattern of Blizzaks makes the whole difference. I run Blizzaks on my other car and they are sweet tires for winter.

Get a separate set of rims and change over during spring and fall. As others have said above, don't run snow tires in the summer - the rubber is designed to stay soft in the cold and is not meant for hot weather.

If you've got room to store them, then buy a breaker bar and a floor jack. It won't take much time at all to swap over the wheels and you can rotate them twice a year. If you don't want to do it yourself, some of the better tire shops will store your wheels and swap them for you for a modest fee.

Buy the Blizzaks and run them all year. You are a perfect candidate for that. Find reports from people who actually run them year round and you will find them rave about longevity. I have Blizzaks on my t4r and AWD sienna and they are not coming off. Original all season run flats last <20k on the 2011 sienna. Blizzaks will do way better than that.

Seems to me that you need to worry more about your gas going bad than how winter tires will drive for the ten miles you will drive during the summer.

I'd go with Blizzaks i've had them and many including I was amazed as to how well they performed.. I literally pulled up behind a stuck rav4 in 8" of snow and after helping him push I pulled away no problem in my beater accord

If you're serious about winter tires, Nokians are the best. I run the Nokian LT2 because a lot of the roads I travel for work are less than ideal and I wanted the higher ply count. That said, Nokian's best winter tire they offer is the Hakk 7 SUV. Note that both of those are studded, not sure on your local laws. They offer studless versions as well and are quite good.

Thanks..... that's my point, and that's what I seeking to know. I'd likely never drive the T4R in the summer to anywhere other than the local post office. It is a seasonal vehicle to us. We want it reliable when it needs to really be reliable. Sorry for such stupid questions. Some of us in this universe have never had SUV's before.

Avalanche, with your mainly-winter usage, it sounds like the winter-rated Nokian WR G2 SUV would be a good choice.

I've run them on my past two 4Runners, and they perform well in every winter condition--from snow, to slush, to ice, to rain-- yet are a quiet and reasonably high mileage tire the rest of the year. Their hydroplaning resistance is much better than most winter tires.

With your minimal summer driving, you could leave the Nokians on year-round and avoid the expense of a second set of tires and wheels. This is exactly what the WR G2 SUV is designed to do.
