the only reason for this type toyota PITA filter is recycling of the filter.
this type is much better to reduce pollution and aids in proper disposal.
spin on filters all vary in quality. I have other vehicles with screw on filters and I also cut them open to inspect , media on the toyota filters is the same as the screw on's that I use .
If you have a vehicle with a screw on filter use the Wix XP series filters. synthetic media and very strong and full flow over 15K miles. made for use with long mile synthetic oil changes.
toyota filters more spillage IMO... and will the oil jockey replace those O rings or even the filter media ???
No. Cartridge filters can typically handle higher pressure and higher flows and have more filter media. Recycling is a myth that you are perpetuating. Both are filled with oil so both would be considered a hazardous waste. You can also recycle both of them.
Cutting your filter open is also another myth. Typically the particles that cause the most damage are too small to see with the naked eye. If you see shavings the damage is already done. Also the filter media is around 15- 40 micron. You cannot see nor judge the difference between 40 micron and 80 micron so you cannot visually determine a "good" or a "terrible" filter.
Wix filters are not so good. In fact the machines used to manufacture the Wix filters use a different brand filter called Pall. Wix couldn't afford the downtime if they used their own filters.
