So I exploded my CV on the trail yesterday

Out wheeling yesterday, the 'cup' of the driver's cv that secured to the hub exploded and I ended up with the middle of the driver's front axle on the trail below my truck. AAA brought me home though [emoji106]

I had 4Lo engaged and the center diff locked. After switching to 4Hi and unlocking the center diff, the truck acted as if I was still in neutral after engaging Drive or Reverse. I re-engaged 4Lo and the center diff and the truck was able to move under its own power. However, about every 1 wheel revolution or so, there was a distinctive clunk.

I'm hoping I just need to throw in a new axle but I don't think I will be that lucky. My mechanic is taking a look at it tomorrow

This is normal operation.

However the periodic clunk/shudder you mentioned sounds suspiciously like a busted ring and/or pinion in the differential.

I wish you luck.

Thanks for the info. I kind of figured it just wasn't happy with only 3 functioning axles in place.

As for the ring and pinion, I've sourced an 'A' quality complete front axle assembly (both axles and complete front diff) for $250 before shipping.

My only question is, should I just swap out a new ring & pinion, if that's what's making the noise or the entire diff. I'm trying to keep the repair costs to a minimum.

If you just bought the gears, you would have to set them up yourself or have someone do it, who might still screw it up. I'd look into ECGS, or buy a similar used full front differential to swap over to from Ebay or a local salvage source.

Thanks for the link, I already priced out a new rebuilt clamshell from ECGS.

I'm going to go with the entire front axle assembly from the salvage yard that I was quoted $250 for an 'A' quality unit.

I should hear from my mechanic today with a diagnosis

Status update:

My mechanic took a look at the truck and said he noticed there was noise coming from the rear diff

However, it apparently isn't as simple as popping off the rear diff cover in order to check out what's going on [emoji853]

I really don't want to have to buy a new rear diff $$&

it sounds like your rear diff is probably gonna look like this then.

maybe not as bad but still needing replacement. if i were you id just put gears in it. youll already be paying the labor to pull everything apart and probably to have a new R&P set up. might aswell do a regear.

and our v8 trucks tend to mangle the diffs if you stand on the skinny pedal on the trail. 9/10 doctors highly discourage that.
