Hey bud,

I'm going to just throw this out there for you. In most cases in the area it is cheaper to buy one. By the time you pay the shop rate it is going to cost more. There is a guy out in the IE that I use and is great.

Yeah, I use a jig since I do so many. If a fab shop had to start from scratch its a very involved process, at least mine are. I wish I could get mine across the country a little cheaper for ya.:thumb3:

is it just the pics, or do your racks actually curve slightly to follow the roof?

Your better off getting a Whitson or Gobi since most of the fabricators in Socal will charge alot. Unless there a buddy of yours, it will be more that whats out on the market now.
I went on CL and found a cheapy one for $100, I dont have the thing on 24/7 but it does the job whenever I go camping and up to Big Bear
 
its weird that the 4th gen rack is $50 more than the 3rd gen, is it that much bigger? either way, still so much cheaper than Gobi :cheers:

The price difference is all in the mounts and hardware required for the 4th gen, the 3rd gen's rails are a much simpler platform for a builder to attach stuff to. I like being competitive pricewise but i hate that so many customers are on the other side of the country since shipping is pricey.

Have you ever looked in to Greyhound package express? Not sure on their size limitations, but I have used them in the past to ship doors, bumpers, etc for far cheaper than the standard UPS/FedEx/USPS/trucking company options. Only downside is you have to drop off and pick up at a bus station.
 
Before i started building these almost exclusively i built and shipped smaller racks with greyhound and had some pretty terrible experiences, they actually lost a rack for three months, by that time my customer had his money back and i had a rack built to his specs and nothing to do with it. their rates still get pretty high for cross country shipments and take a looooong time with no tracking. Just been too dicey for my likings. Florida to California is just a long way to travel.... Unfortunately.

hmm I always had pretty good luck with them when I used them. Of course that was back when ebay was worth selling on too, so things change.
 
the rack and awning deal from [MENTION=68093]zooroadbaja[/MENTION] is killer for anyone that wants/doesnt mind a flat utility rack!

I was in the market for a rack for the 3rd gen.. but after some consideration and in adequate funds i was convinced to drop the idea and look for one for the 5th gen.. i found an ad on CL for a socal fabricator (La verne, near LA) that builds baskets for 250 + mounts... i reached out to him on behalf of my dad and if you want i can PM you his info... not going to post his info since i have no affiliation with the person and hes not part of our community..

For all else who are considering a rack.. whitson is the way to go if shipping isnt too bad..
 
Off topic, but I'm looking at buying one of the Whitson roof racks, can anyone on here that owns one report if there is any kind of wind noise at highway speeds? I had one on my Jeep XJ that drove me crazy.

yes, there is wind noise, just no way around hearing 7 feet of tube on your roof. BUT, a very simple plexiglass wind fairing is all it takes to kill the noise. Check out [MENTION=63060]rickashay[/MENTION] 's variant in this awesome photo:
