Here's my setup and my rationale as to why it works for me.
First, I am fortunate enough to live where I can concealed carry, but cannot carry in the office. Thus my weapon must stay in the vehicle during the workday.
Second, I have children and they have friends. As a result, I feel responsible to have my weapons properly secured when not in my direct possession.
I went the console vault route. I initially thought of rigging up a holster in the vault and transferring the weapon from that holster to another IWB holster if I want to carry on my person. I didn't like the idea of having to unholster and reholster a loaded, chambered pistol every time I wished to carry IWB.
My solution involved modifying a Salex organizer to fit my safe and cutting a small slit in the organizer so the holster clip positively engages the organizer itself. The weapon will draw cleanly from the holster. If I wish to remove the holster/weapon combination for personal carry I can pull on the holster clip and remove both simultaneously.
Yes, the safe does impede access. However, I always have the option of unlocking it while traveling. I can also (and often do on non-workdays) simply retrieve the holstered weapon from the safe and travel with it IWB if I know I will be entering/exiting the vehicle with any regularity.
Just my 2 cents. Every solution has its advantages/disadvantages. Enjoying reading about different approaches!
