SOLVED 4runner tick clack click tap sounds from front end

For about 6 months ive been getting a ridiculous clicking / clack sound from the front.

My truck (2004) has 200k miles...

comes and goes, everywhere said LCA bushings, CV'S, sway bar bushings, and blah blah blah.

Guess what it was?

FRONT BUMPER MOUNTS.

yes, the 8 nuts holding the front bumper was binding and they literally torqued these at like 1000lbs

so slightly loosen them and apply some oil (or grease) and tighten them back down...and then ENJOY THE SILENCE!!!!!

Can you describe the sound more? Like how often would you hear it? At slow speeds or fast or all the time? Turning or going straight? A one time sound or a repetitive click/clack/clunk?

I've had clunk on my front end for awhile, but all suspension parts are new, so this may be something worth checking out since putting on the new bumper.

slowing down to a stop, clang
speeding up, clang
some bumps, clack
when it rains, muffled clack

best way to see if its the culprit, loosen all bolts to finger tight. drive around...

It could be more than just the bolts, could be binding the body it self.
I am going to put a small thin spacer between the frame and bumper mount. it will be an aluminum sheet giving the space it needs while staying rust free.

I can vouch for how tight they were. Next to impossible to remove when I did my ARB bumper. They were not rusted, either.

I tried to do this fix when chasing my noise. The bolts are definitely tight, but I Had no trouble breaking them loose with a 1/2 inch ratchet and pipe. I anti seized them and tightened them back without the pipe. It did not change the noise I was getting at all. Spent about another year until I found my noise at the exhaust spring flex joint where there Y-pipe connects to the muffler pipe. If you hit it, it will make noise, if you simply shake it, it wont.

Oh good to know with the exhaust springs but my sounds did not return.

As i said, do not tighten back up,
loosen all nuts and drive around to see if it got rid of the noise.

if true, I am sure you can figure it out from there.

If you tighten them back up as soon as you loosen them, you might not have fixed the issue.

I verified my noise as soon as I tightened the bumper cross bar nuts back down. Noise came right back. I replaced the nits with lock nuts so they will not back off. Just tight enlightened to not make the noise.

yep, i fixed mine by putting a small thin spacer between the bumper and the mount, then tightening. That tiny 2mm space gave it what it needed to stop that Annoying sound!

I verified my noise as soon as I tightened the bumper cross bar nuts back down. Noise came right back. I replaced the nits with lock nuts so they will not back off. Just tight enlightened to not make the noise.

I’ve been searching for this click noise for MONTHS! Totally solved! I put lock washers on before the nuts and snugged them down. Then put nylock nuts on and locked them against each other so there’s no risk of them backing off after flexing. The things I’ve replaced trying to find this click......

It's a fact, its all I've heard from this guy for 2 months :lalala:
