I'm sure Toyota knows about this with the number of vehicles I've seen with the issue a percentage of them have to make it to the dealer. I'm going to go out on a limb and say Toyota would have people that occasionally look in on the forums as well. Hell when I Tweeted that I blew the clutch in my daily driver Scion, I had contact from a Scion rep with in a couple hours asking for more info on the vehicle to see if there was something they could do to help. Being 82k and modified i wasn't looking for help, just venting.

I'm going to say if this was a problem under 100k miles Toyota would probably be worried about it. The way it is though things do wear out over time. I don't think its asking too much to do preventive maintenance and service on a vehicle. Especially since the lower ball joints are fairly cheap and easy to replace.

Mine personally made it 180k with quite a few off road adventures, towing, and plenty of pot hole abuse. I was happy with their useful life.

Most of these failures are happening between 170k-200k to me any suspension/ steering component should be gone over before that as PM(preventative maint.) I know from my Chevy trucks that they usually require a rebuild under normal use about 125k with new pitman, drag arms etc. Besides a few dozen cases or even 1000 out of the several hundred thousand 3rd gens produced do not warrant Toyota fixing a problem. That being said they did do a recall on later model 3rd gens for this issue.

My failure happened from the bolts failing not the LBJ. However my LBJ's only had about 40k on them at the time as I had replaced the factory ones at 185k. I strongly suggest oredering new OEM bolts to replace with and to keep a few spares if you do a lot of wheeling and replace CV axles often. Don't forget to use blue loc-tite and proper torque.

hey i know it's a odd question but you happen to know the length,pitch and size of those bolts? if can snag a few here at work while i'm here today that'd be sweet!
 
No idea on the thread size or pitch. I was ordering all sorts of OEM parts from TRDparts4U and got the factory bolts. The 4 local dealers near me wanted $2.75- $4.00 each for them and I got them for $.84 each. I ordered 16 so I would have replacements but ended up installing my spares on another board members Runner when we did the So Cal run in June(33 4Runners showed up for that one).

I'm remembering m10 x 1.25

generally factory hardware works like this:

10mm head is an M6 x 1.0
12mm head is an M8 x 1.25
14mm head is an M10 x 1.25 (unless you are working on Nissan or VW then it can be 1.5)
17mm head is usually a 12mm thread size

There are of course exceptions
