Someone please ****ing kill me... Balljoint disaster pictures inside.

Looks like the man above had your back. It could have been allot worse for sure.

You're a good friend LINY for extending the invite.

I'm with you Clemson, are there any common signs of failure. Having reviewed a few of these threads it appears the common stand alone denominator which screams out is the “odometer reading.”. It appears if you're floating near, at or past the 160-200K miles and haven't considered replacement you are gambling with possible failure.

I have also learned, a number of failures have occurred due to improper installation. Do recheck your work or your mechanics work for proper torque of everything. It's worth the extra time and could save allot of headaches trying to fix blame later. CYA

Holy smokes, why do these incidents seem to always happen driving in neighborhoods at slower speeds? Not that it's a bad thing. Sucks to hear man, good luck with the repairs.

If it's going to happen, it's going to happen. I wouldn't wish it on anyone, but if it's going to happen, hope to god it's on a back road at 15mph.

I have room in my truck too bud. I'm sure if you get too emo on me, I can turn the stereo up.

Wow, glad your ok and the truck has no body damage from that! But like others have said, at least it didn't happen at highway speeds....that probably wouldn't end well. Hope you get it fixed and running again soon man

Glad you are ok dude. Like everyone else said, it could have been much worse. Seeing your Runner sitting on the ground like that scares the pi$$ out of me. I am pushing 150K and am wondering if I should go ahead and replace mine...

I have 115k on my t4r and check for play last week. Still felt tight and solid, but I'm changing mi inner and outer tie rods and was thinking of doing LBJ since Im doing the other replacements.

Opi, first thing I though when saw the thread was "part out?".. You did say disaster after all..

But seeing the photos I cannot agree more with everyone else, you got extremely lucky. I see virtually no body damage. Just a few suspension components needing to be replaced.. And I want to see what the slide did the to side of that duratrac, looks like it could have scrapped a decent amount of tread off.

Glad you're OK man!

.

Has there been any failures of lbj before hitting the 150k mark

I cant recall ever hearing about one before the 150k mark. But if its on your mind as a potential problem, I say replace them no matter what mileage you're at.

Any signs that this was about to happen?

This:
this also explains the sloppy steering i experience the last week or two... sigh.

oooooSHiiiiiiiii
182k on ours.

So it looks like the ball ate it's way out of the joint? Is that the rusty top of the ball I'm seeing?

This is just crazy to me. This has happened to quite a few people on here now. Im glad your ok.

So I think we all know what to take from this. If you're anywhere near 150k on your original ball joints (lower and upper), and I would even say around 115K on them, replace them. And those with lifts like 3 or higher, you already know that they need changed significantly more frequently, especially if you do a lot of wheeling. This isnt something to take a chance with. The pink milkshake could ruin your tranny and radiator and cost a few grand, but this happening on the highway could kill you, along with anyone else in your vehicle. I know Im simply stating what we all know. I just encourage everyone to take care of this. I changed mine 3 months back.

Glad this didnt happen to you on the highway opi

Ouch. I agree with the others that you got lucky that it wasn't much worse. I might do mine soon even though I only have 70k miles. It's still a 10yo ride...

I bought my runner 6 months ago and I'm at 188000 miles. Anyway to tell if mine have been replaced without service records?

You would have to look at them and feel for wear. Alot of times the uppers will knock over a good sized bump. Especially when youre going around a turn. The lowers are harder to tell. You can jack up the front end and check for any movement in the joints. But even if theres no play in the joints, they could still be worn out and close to failure. I guess if you cant get a hold of the previous owner to find out, you would be safe assuming that they have never been replaced. It will cost a couple hundred, but once youve done it at least you know theyre good for the next 100k or so. But I wouldnt leave it to chance with 188k miles

Did mine @90k. I looked under one day and there was a torn boot on the RH. Little to no grease left in it. Parked it for close to a month (not my DD) before I fixed it. Used OEM with new bolts, but did invest $30 in tools to do it. I did not replace the TREs since they were still in good shape.

Replacing these LBJs should supersede doing any mods or the like. I'd say it is much more common that the pink milkshake, at least on this board.

Josh give me a call in the am man, I can meet you somewhere if you want and you can ride with us. Sux but at least there's no body damage to either you or the truck. I'm in md but you ever get in a spot and need a place to wrench on it give me a shout.
