Sourcing a non-KDSS 4runner

Hey all,

So i've been trying to track down a 14'-16' (used/new)4runner Trail w/ non-KDSS here in California. I'm coming to find out that is more difficult than originally thought, if not impossible. Im currently talking to a sales rep who is willing to try to order one from factory, but he sounds certain it will not get accepted (for some reason they wont make/ship non-KDSS Runners to Norcal). Wondering if anyone has any insight or suggestions how i can source one? Do they even sell these Runners in Cali? If not what would be the closest state that does?

All of the TE 4Runners sold through Gulf States Toyota are non-KDSS unless special ordered. I talked to a dealer in Austin,TX who has 1 TEP on the lot and 3 more expected mid-october. Not necessarily close, but they are readily available.

thanks, I didn't know that but def helpful. Worse case scenario I can catch a flight and drive it back. But mid-October? Guess the 2017's wont be coming out before then

I dont know what the current status is but I know when I was looking for 4Runners around here (WA) a few months ago, I couldn't find a TE with KDSS. Every single TE I saw was a non-KDSS vehicle.

Oddly, options are determined by each region, which is why Toyota.com wants your zip code for the builder.

Determining Your Region for Toyota Deals:
Toyota divides the country into 12 regions, offering different deals in each. The territories are listed below. As you research your purchase, keep in mind that you’re not limited to the region you live in.
If there is a significantly better deal available in another region, it might be worth the trouble to travel and buy there. If someone offered you a few thousand dollars to drive to a nearby state and back, you might very well take the deal -- why not make the same drive to save that money on a new car? Once you know your region, make sure you check out the Best Toyota deals available to you.
New England Region -- Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island
Greater New York Region -- New York, New Jersey, Connecticut
Central Atlantic Region -- Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Delaware, District of Columbia
Southeast Region -- North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida
Western Region -- Missouri, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota
Ohio Valley Region -- Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, Tennessee
Midwest Region -- Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota
Mountain Region -- Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Nevada, Wyoming
Gulf States Region -- Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi
Northern CA Region -- California north of the Los Angeles metro area
Southern CA Region -- Los Angeles metro area, and areas south
Pacific Northwest Region -- Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana

Called my salesman on 9/1 about a silver Trail Premium non KDSS. Drove it home on 9/9. It was on the ship at the time of my call so it took a few days to get unloaded in Houston and transported to Ft. Worth.

Paid $37,400 plus TTL. Port installed options were black tube steps and mats.

Got mine in Arizona. At the time they had a couple others in Utah and Nevada. Rare but can be found.

Lol, no way I could afford the kind of hit I'd take from selling immediately after purchasing and then rebuying.

Haha I was mostly joking... But you never know how badly someone might not want KDSS! Start the negotiations at 60k. It's the Art of the Deal.

Curious how you became aware that others were available across states? Any tips on search techniques would be greatly appreciated...

I use AutoTrader a lot when looking for vehicles. I've been looking and planning for next year trying to get budgeting planned out. Hopefully will be buying a 2014+ come August. :thumb:

Some ads are awful (listed as SR5 and it's a Limited, etc.) and the search isn't overly accurate at times (Trail vs. Trail Premium, etc) but you can sort stuff out pretty quickly.

Maybe I'm stating an obvious, but that's been my main tool for the last two vehicles I've bought.

Southern Californian here, same boat as you didn't want the KDSS, but all Trails were equipped with it.

Did an expansive search that brought up Arizona and Nevada, found a couple set up the way I wanted. I used Cars.com.

What are your plans for the truck. DO you plan to keep it 100% stock? plan to keep it for a long time...? Reason I ask.. is KDSS is pretty good to have if you plan to keep it mostly stock and keep it for a typical time frame.. Even with a lift and typical mild mods, it can be a really nice feature to have. If big mods are in your plans, then a Sr5 may be something to consider.

Thanks for your input, I have considered the Sr5, but like the additional off road features of the trail. Plus I like the non-functional scoop, my last 4th Gen SE had one and I liked it, ha. KDSS is not something I have listed as a must have and I rather avoid having to worry about the infamous sag or warranties being voided if and when the system leaks and the dealer see's my rig equipped with aftermarket suspension. I see KDSS making installs harder and longer for me, so I rather do without it.
