Sourcing a non-KDSS 4runner

Curious how you became aware that others were available across states? Any tips on search techniques would be greatly appreciated...

if its a large dealer they should be able to tell you what they have in network. When I bought mine I was deciding between one in Wilmington and one in Charleston (I'm in Raleigh) and they shipped it up for free just required making a down payment.

Thanks for your input, I have considered the Sr5, but like the additional off road features of the trail. Plus I like the non-functional scoop, my last 4th Gen SE had one and I liked it, ha. KDSS is not something I have listed as a must have and I rather avoid having to worry about the infamous sag or warranties being voided if and when the system leaks and the dealer see's my rig equipped with aftermarket suspension. I see KDSS making installs harder and longer for me, so I rather do without it.
The only real offroad feature of the trail is the rear locker. That can be added to the sr5 pretty easy and you may end up ahead overall if modifications are in your plans... Just an option....

Also, might want to talk to owners of 5th gens with the non-functional scoop. It tends to create a very nasty glare.

Use CarGurus to search around Los Angeles. There are 10 trails and 5 Trail Premiums on lots right now. Most of the listings specify if they have KDSS or not.

Thanks, i'll have to download that app and use it. Got like 4 apps now, haha. So far the only non-KDSS Runner I found via Edmonds app is in Bend, OR (at least in the my color preferences of white or gray).

All of the TE 4Runners sold through Gulf States Toyota are non-KDSS unless special ordered. I talked to a dealer in Austin,TX who has 1 TEP on the lot and 3 more expected mid-october. Not necessarily close, but they are readily available.

Still think this (comment) is funny when members say this.... I bought mine in 2014 from Grapevine TX dealership... it was sitting right next to a non-KDSS version. I didn’t special order or travel to another region to buy.

Obviously, I’m not saying the overall premise isn’t true... just that it’s not always 100% true.

Crawl control is pretty nice
Fun toy, but has a vary narrow use case. I've spent hundreds of hours off road with 5th gens and FJs and never seen it used once with success. Neat idea that does not really play out in the real world.

Hope you had a good buying experience. I haven't so I bought my Tacoma and 4Runner elsewhere. Grapevine's service dept. seems pretty ok though.

A friend of a friend that works in sales. It's a regional model . A unicorn in our region. Believe it only comes in one color in our region, silver.

I just used it twice on my big bear trip this weekend. My 3 rd trip out in the truck . It's niiiiiiice.

I'm just going off of what 3 different dealerships have told me. They said they did have one KDSS Trail recently but it had been a special order by a dealership employee who eventually opted out. You are correct, there are exceptions to every rule.

Thats crazy. Never thought it would hard to find a non KDSS model equipped in California. When I started shopping for one I thought it would be hard to find a non KDSS model here in Colorado. I actually found more KDSS equipped trails opposed the Premium's. We wanted a premium model anyways so that made it easy.

Both times... so-so. Bought my 2007 Runner there, and the 2014 as well. Don't recall either being wonderful memories; but I'm also in sales, so I just play the game in as short as time as possible, make sure I have #s predetermined for both trade in and new one... and walk if I need to.

Cars are losing investments no matter how you skin it... when I find one I want, I don't let sh!tty sales people get in my way.

They had a non-KDSS Trail Premium White at Centennial Toyota on Las Veagas last week. I almost flew out to Vegas to get it. I really wanted white ended up with a Silver KDSS Trail Premium from a local dealer. Since he was one of the only dealer to get me close to invoice and at cost on extended warranty. Also Frontier Toyota in Valencia has a TRD on the lot the buyer pre-ordered and didnt pass credit. They are willing to do MSRP rare in Cali., Im sure that one one last but a trip to Vegas isnt a bad thing.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll see what they want for it. Not too keen on leather interior, but maybe if the price is right and if its available I may consider it.

I see a trail at that Vegas dealership but it's not a premium.

Maybe they sold it, is the silver/grey one in Vegas non-kdss? I really wanted white but took function over looks. PS If you buy it in Vegas you pay sales tax of where you register it. Also try Big Two Toyota of Chandler AZ. fly in and drive I forget the name of the sales lady she was extremely nice and helpful maybe began with a K. they had lots T4Rs on the lot. Kinda funny but not only free tint but free mani/pedicure and a haircut or something oddball willing to go under MSRP. I told them I was in california and they searched above and beyond another so cal dealer, she even called back and asked if I bought the one they pointed me to. I told them no and they never asked or gave me a sales pitch to drive out there.

haha, that might be the selling point to convince the fiancé to tag along with me!

Thanks to everyones search tips, I located my unicorn! I got myself an auto loan and just booked a flight to go pick up my 4runner Trail without KDSS first thing in the morning!
