And PD - you would have been able to easily do the trails we did, with no threat of damage, except for Palmetto (I chose to skip that one for the same reasons ). Your tires would have walked you right up Trail 28 much easier than I got up on my all-terrains. Heck, your rig is definitely more capable than mine, even without lockers. We'll get you to do it next time

I agree, I think I could of made it through some of the trails I choose not to. I am just a little more hesitant these days then I use to be. I know the 4Runner can handle it just not sure I can, lol.

You're right man... I'll do 28 and the top of Heartbreaker next go around. I looked back through my old notes and I've actually run 56 before. Probably still pass on Palmetto Crossing for now. I'm probably one of the few in the group that has actually ran Lil' Devil, Mutiny Ridge, and goofed around in the Bowl/Death Valley/Radical Ravine area (and now the bottom of Heartbreaker :whoo

But you're right. The ATRAC and Mud Grapps definitely make this rig hard to stop. I'm more and more impressed with it every outing. So much so, that I may replace these Nitto's with another set when it's time. If you can get past the road noise, these things are pure beastly!

I'll concede that getting to watch the different set-ups did give me a way better grasp at just how much everything comes into play. Like Rear Lockers vs. Front + Rear Lockers vs. ATRAC, A/T's vs. M/T's, and what seemed to be one of the biggest players out there, Wheelbase. Unbelievable! So just as a reference, the FJC has 105.9" wheelbase and was very prone to standing up or picking up tires. As was the 3rd Gen at 105.3. Your double cab Taco at 140.9" wheel base was susceptible to high centering on the up and overs, but proved to be very valuable, when 28 got gnarly, in keeping traction where you needed it. The 4th Gen's just seem to come in just right for Gulches at 109.8" as I felt planted, while still able to clear all day.

Yep - I think the 4th gen Runner has the perfect wheelbase for most places. It's right in the middle of the FJ and the Tacoma.

I do have the shortbed though, which comes in at 128" wheelbase - yet I was still getting stuck on the hills. Just shows how much difference the 18" makes. The only thing I can do is go up in tire size to try and increase the break over angle. Nothing more embarrassing than sitting on a little hill with all 4 tires spinning in the air :frusty:

Looks like a great place to wheel! I just got back into wheeling last year and have only been to URE. I have a pile of parts waiting to go in the '85, so I will keep an eye out for the next trip.

Looked amazing, too bad i could not make it, hopefully next time. Austin is a beast, i watched the video of you getting up Heartbreak hill and i saw the guy who fliped over before. My hat goes down in front of you, you have mad skillls. PD your truck looks beastly on those trails. Let me know when a next one, i will definately try to make a trip down.

lol aside from that old drama the next run should be at uhwarrie national forest. in April one of the weekends after it opens.

it's in North Carolina; however, I must say it's worth the trip. it's nice to plan a camping trip out there and make a weekend of wheeling if you can. lots of great trails and obstacles!

Uwharrie is the national forest is right at Badin lake and lake tillery in NC theres a gas station we all meet at you can search for directions call "The Elderado Outpost" in troy county.

The Park at uhwarrie opens here in a few weekends we can go as early as the first weekend in april if you want. Its 5 dollars for a day pass 35 bucks for a season pass. season runs until next december.

Just an FYI for you guys...the group I ride with (GA Trail Riders) is pretty much taking over Gulches that first weekend of April. It's an open ride, so anyone is welcome to join us. GRanted, not many (if any) Toyotas besides me, but a great group, with different rig levels.

Feel free to hit up our site (gatrailriders.com) or let me know if you need more info. We will start arriving on Friday April 5th.

I was thinking, since my boys' spring break is that week, that I might try and hit UWharrie during the week before this ride, since I believe it opens April 1 (or is it the first weekend in APril it opens?). I'd sure rather have someone who knew their way around, though. So, if anyone would be able to ride anytime from April 1-4 at UWharrie, and you know your way around, I would be your best friend for life. Well, at least while we're riding.
