Southern Style Offroad Full Length Roof Rack

Finally pulled the trigger on this! Been putting it off for far too long. Can't wait for the rack to show up... I'll be sure to share some pictures once I get it and get it installed.

A question for everyone that went with this rack: what have you done for ladder options? Specifically for our... ahem... larger individuals... do you have any solutions? I'm 6'5" and a little north of the suggested maximum weight for the Gobi and C4 ladders, and thats before I throw something over my shoulder to put up on top of the rack. Anyone have an idea for a rear ladder? I'm considering ordering one of these and keeping it in the tool box... But I don't know how well it will actually work in practice without scratching up the side of the 4runner:

Maybe put something on top of the ladder that could lean up against the rack and at the same time hold the ladder out away from the side of the 4runner? Or just go with one of the lift-gate ladder options?

I just noticed some chipped paint on my roof. I've only used the factory rails a couple of times, but I guess that's enough to scratch the roof. I think I need a real rack now and SSO seems to be the way to go. Any clue on if they ever have a GB or sale on this? Or just cave and pay full price?

They had a spring sale last year so I'd wait for that, downside is shipping times were affected - due to the popularity I imagine.

I ordered too early and missed the sale but still got caught up in the backlog due to the sale so my roof rack didn't arrive in time for the camping season.

That said, all set to go now, def worth the wait !

Sorry, I don't remember the date of the sale or the discount but I ordered it about this time last year, sale was sometime after that. Maybe a fathers day sale? Suggest you just call them and ask.

No problem, I will call- although they don't have an incentive to advertise future sales which would cut into full value sales right now.

Separately, does anyone have the extended hight railing? That extra ridge is something I really like about Gobi since I don't have plans for a RTT. Looks like its a great option which would make loading lots of smaller items (camping chair/tables, luggage) safer/easier, but I have only seen the pics on the SSO site and those are not even powder coated. Its an extra 200-300 with shipping so I don't just want to order without getting some input. Ill speak to SSO about it, but was hoping somewhere here was a guinea pig.

I don't have one and I assume any awning that can be installed using the cross bars would work.

Your talking laser cut side plates which they should always have an overstock of and precut cross bars which they should always have an overstock of?

Drives me nuts waiting months for every product I order for my 4runner. Custom built bumpers are time consuming..fine, hire the people you need to do the work.

But this rack should be extremely easy to keep in stock since there is not much of any fabricating to do

I'm guessing that they send out a months worth of orders at a time to the laser cutter. It's cheaper that way to only do the setup once, run all of your orders, and maximize your steel sheets. They're fortunate enough to be in an industry where "pay now and wait indefinitely" has been accepted by customers, so they're never forced to manufacture their product ahead and hope they take enough orders to sell it.
