Status Update!​

Thanks for all the well-wishes and kind words the last couple of days.

It appears that all is well and/or back to normal.

In fact...

She was very pleased that I didn't go to Antman's house yesterday to get the switch installed for the accent lighting (because she was upset and told me - at the time - "you better not go over there")...so she said, "Awww...that was nice of you. Go get the switch done."

Then I told her about the concert discussion, and she thought it was funny. She was also intrigued by the thought of humiliating me by posting a picture of me at the concert in a Toyota shirt, and was very intrigued about doing a mod that appears in my thread. Let's hope it doesn't involve anything "pink".

And...

She told me to get something for my truck for Easter.

These are ordered and on the way:

Found both of them on EBay (I can give more specific links if you're interested...just search "trd leather shift knob"). Had to be careful with the first one - 99% of the shifters out there that look like that have a manual transmission shift pattern on the top.

Status Update - Dateline, Easter

Ummmm...I don't know what I did to get back in the wife's good graces, but here's what's gone down the last 24 hours...

Helped her with her homework and term paper. Rocked baby to sleep a lot. Was extremely helpful.

Sold Star Wars stuff for way less than I thought I'd actually get because all 4 of my price models were worthless and stupid.

Was told that I could take $250 and put it towards wife-approved mods. She really likes the accent lighting and the backup camera switch. She told me to keep doing mods that add functions that it didn't have before.

So when I rolled out a list of things I wanted to do, here's how it went:

Satoshi Grille mod: No
Magnaflow muffler: No
Infiniti Kappa dash speakers: Yes
USB Hard Drive in glovebox for music: Yes
Putco Yellow 3k fog bulbs: Yes

Think I'll round out the remaining part of my budget with TE fog bezels to replace the chrome ones, an exhaust tip, and HIR bulbs for the headlights.

AND...she's kind of excited about doing one of the mods.

So the shift knobs are on their way. I still have a switch for my accent lighting, interior door handle LEDs, storage tray LEDs, and cupholder LEDs sitting on the workbench in Antman's garage. And I have color-matched door handles in my cargo area, ready to install when we have the door panels off for the door handle LED install.

Then I need to figure out how to attack the remaining chrome on the outside of the truck.


Front Grille: The best way to do this would be to do the Satoshi Grille mod and be done with it. I love the look of that mod, but Mrs. Sp8ball isn't a fan. I'm trying to point out FJ's on the road to give her some perspective of what it looks like. Alternatively, I hope to be getting a front garnish piece (the chrome wings) from a Satoshi modder, at which time i'll try to strip off the chrome paint and get it repainted in Salsa Red Pearl.

Roof Rack End Pieces: Antman got told that he had the green light to get a Gobi Stealth rack, so I'm hoping I'll get to help him install it, and then steal his roof rack pieces to paint black (plastidip) and replace mine.

Rear Garnish: *sigh* This one is subject to many other factors. If I end up being able to do the Satoshi mod - effectively leaving the front of my truck "black" - I may just order the TE garnish (black) and be done with it. We pulled up behind a Salsa Red Pearl TE yesterday, and that garnish piece was the first thing I noticed (see below). If I leave the "wings" on the front grille and paint them Salsa Red, then I should do the same for the rear garnish piece. I'll pop it off, take it to a shop, and get it painted. Then re-seat the chrome/silver Toyota logo and 4Runner lettering.

I did the USB hard drive thing, and I find it only really useful if I just put the stereo on "random". The navigation between folders is a bit cumbersome and slow if you have quite a bit of music on there, so it's much more effective to just fill it with all of your favorite music and let the stereo pick!

On the yellow bulbs: is that a personal preference or a science thing? I'm trying to dig-up some empirical data, but check this out if you believe it's a science thing: Car Talk

Both those links discuss what happens to light when it hits fog (refracts equally in all directions) but that is only a description of that specific interaction and totally fails to address the rest of the problem. The correct question is: what color of light works better in fog for the human eye, which one provides better depth perception in humans while minimizing perceived refraction since parts of the blue spectrum make it impossible to focus clearly, same on the red end, etc. In other words, it's not about what happens when light hits water, but what happens when light hits the eye that matters.

And I do agree with your first link that the light should be low to be best effective.
