Spare Key Cost $$$

Here's what I did:

1.) Go on ebay, buy a Toyota blank with a chip in it. Usually about $10 for a transponder key. Usually about $29 if you want the transponder key with remote (like we get when we buy the vehicle -NON LIMITED).

2.) Take key to Home Depot, get cut for $1.00

2.) Get the techstream software cable from ebay (you can program many things with this including windows up/down & seatbelt chime). Can be had for around $39 if you "Make an offer" to a seller.

3.) Program your new key.


Done.

Has anyone bought any keys that have worked using this method with the software. I tried it about 3 years ago and I guess my key did not have the chip in it because the software would not program it. Links where you purchased or any description would help. Thanks!

Bump - anyone? Mine only came with one key fob and a valet key. I spent 40k on a brand new vehicle and I am not happy. The salesman who sold me my car just called me back and said he spoke to services or something and apparently my car had 1000 miles on it, it was technically "used" so they arent required to give me two key fobs, just two keys total. Currently waiting for a call back from the manager. Not happy at all

I have been searching through the posts and it seems, for the most part, instructions on programing a key end at 2009. Some may have luck on a 2011 but nothing near the 2016 instructions I'm looking for.

Can anyone help me with programing a new key for a 2016 SR5? I bought it on Friday and when they handed over the keys, they handed me one. Now they want $300 to give me a spare!! Needless to say I'm a little upset about it but need to move on and figure it out.

Has anyone had luck programing a 2016 yet? I really don't want to support the dealership...

I could be wrong but I think you need to find someone that has Techstream with a Security Professional licence in order to do it...

I lost the spare key that I had. I still have one of the original fobs and a valet key. I bought two of the new transponder keys off of ebay and will get them programmed at a local locksmith for $75.

I have a 2015 SR5 non-smart key 4Runner that came with only one key. I was able to get a transponder key on Amazon for around $22. I went the route of getting my own techstream cable off eBay and installing the techstream software on my windows 10 laptop. It's fairly straightforward to program the new remote and immobilizer to the 4runner. Now all I have to do is get it cut at a locksmith and I'm good to go.

At the very least, I'll take some part numbers for the cable so I can do it myself...

I ended up getting the key cut at a local locksmith: $10 (prob should have checked out home depot or lowes). Same locksmith quoted me $70 to program the new key but I went to my local auto shop where I take my Lotus. Ran into some issues with their new Autel programming tool. They were able to get the transponder to enable and turn on the car so that was good enough for now. Cost me $20 for now.

The important takeaway for me was to properly install the drivers as per the instructions. The Techstream version I got with the cable was 10.30.029 and came with all the files I needed to follow the instructions. I originally tried a 12.XX.XX version found online but it didn't want to work for me but was fine when I reverted back to the original version I got.

Once you have everything set up you can go to the options in the techstream program to program the remote and the immobilizer - the program walks you through the process. I can't remember specifically which options in techstream to access but that can quickly be googled.

This should be enough to go on but feel free to PM me if you need assistance.:thumb3:

Oh, and I should mention that I got the key cut yesterday for about $6 at a local locksmith, it works flawlessly! Total cost ~$42 to get a replacement and I have the techstream to program options/check codes/add & subtract keys to my 4Runner.

Since the door lock actuators respond quickly and decisively to door handle button, I am assuming that the problem is with the signal transmission between the key and the receiver(s). To me, it seems to be a problem with the transmission power in the key. Do these assumptions seem possible? Can the dealer "recharge" the power in the key or otherwise reprogram the key to make it work?

Battery in the remote may need replaced. I lost an entire set of keys about 6 months ago near my home. Never found them and I even used a metal detector every where around my place. Now I have one set with the remote.

Most likely just a low battery. Do you have another spare key. Does that one behave differently ?

Yes. It doesn't work at all. I am not sure it was ever programmed.
