Spare key

I stopped in to Lowes to get a spare key made to keep hidden on the truck and the girl there said she couldn't make one because of the electronics in the original key.
Was she right?

Doesn't the valet key still have a transponder? How would it start the vehicle without one?

Edit- just noticed this was general not 5th gen

I don't think the valet has any electronics it only works on the door and ignition I have a 2017 5th gen and it appears to be as the OP was seeking just a generic key you can get at Lowe's it doesn't have any keyless features and it cannot open the glove box, I am also told you cannot use it to roll down the rear window from the tailgate. but if you need an emergency back up key the door and the ignition are better than no key.

the 5th gen valet key has a transponder, it just won't open the glove box or trunk. if you copy it you will need to copy the transponder. i guess lowe's can't do this but a locksmith should be able to.

That is good information to have, information I didn't know. so if you bring the valet key to Lowe's they will copy it because it looks like a normal key, but what you're saying is it won't start the car?

i don't know what they would do today, when i worked at a hardware story years ago we had a machine that you could hold the key to that would tell you if it had a chip but that was back when only expensive cars had them

from a quick google at least some lowes will copy them and can clone the transponder. walmart apparently can also do it.

I have been to several different hardware stores that offers cloning chip key but they can't do Toyotas because of the encryption of thier chips.

True about the transponder. If you know a guy who has a scanner/programmer just buy the key from the stealership and have someone else program it. I just bought a truck with only 2 keys and no key fob so I’m having my buddy with the scanner program an extra key for me. Last one he did was my 02 Honda Civic all I paid was 40 bucks for the key and gave him a six pack for 3 mins of work

Yes, if OP just wants a key in case keys gets locked inside the car that will be perfect. Without the transponder it will only unlock the door (as far as I know, I did this with my previous car that had a chip because I only had 1 key).

I don't think home depot lady is correct, I think she means that it will not start the car, they can cut it though and it will open the doors. When I did it they guy told me "it wonk work because it has a chip" I told him I know and to just cut the dumb key lol

Hello,

Even though is a Valet Key, it still has a chip. Cause that Valet key will start the Vehicle, but it shouldn't open the glove box with that key only the master key.

Working retail, I got tired of signing keys out. Asked Lowes to cut me some personal copies, on my dime, just so I didn't have to deal with it.

They told me they could not Apparently, the have some principles. I believe I even offered a $20, and the guy declined.
