Speaker suggestions?

I have to get rid of my subs. :(

I want to replace the stock speakers with something else that will have good sound. I know I won't get the same bass performance, but that is OK. I just want something that sounds good.

Can I install 6x9 speakers in the rear spots in a '02 limited? if not, what size do I need and any suggestions for quality?

I have an amp and am thinking of connecting the amp to the new speakers. Any thoughts on this?

idk about the 6x9's in the door. in my 97 the rear speaker is a 4" and the front door will fit a 6 1/2" i know 4" seems small but thats just what it is.

and as for speakers i had polk db's both front and rear, but they blew out so now i have memphis car audio and im super impressed. they are a little pricey $130 for the 6.5" but they have a lifetime warranty for blowing. speakers are all personal preference on what you think sounds the best
 
I am a huge fan of the Kicker SS Component series, I'm running them in both door and the sound flawless, even at full volume. The only downside is they cost $500.00 a pair. You can get kicker KS components which is still a phenomenal speaker for around $150.00 a pair. You have an 02' so you will be able to fit a 5 1/4" speakers in the rear doors. A few other great speaker brands are Infinity, Focal, Hertz, and Polk. Memphis makes some good stuff too, especially if you are planning on overdriving them.

Also you have to decide if you want components (separate tweeter and mid-bass) or a Coaxial (tweeter is built into the cone of the mid-bass woofer). Since you have an 02' you should have a tweeter pod in your door panel, if you do I would definitely suggest at least getting a component for the front. I run components in the rear as well but you will have to drill holes in the door panels to fit the tweeters into.

As for your amplifier, I am assuming it is the one you used with your sub? If so it depends on the power rating of the amp and the classification of the amplifier, Mono, 2-Channel, 4-Channel, etc... If you could post the model number of the amp I can tell you if it is useable.

One more thing, are you removing your sub due to space issues or other, "complaints"? Because if you have space issues you could put an infinity bass link under your seat, it would sufficiently fill n the low frequency gap without getting in the way.
 
im a big fan of the infinity kappa series component setup. had them in my jeep wrangler and gave me a good amount of bass because i didnt have room for a sub.

but if your looking at space constraints, check out the jl audio thin subs that are like less than 2 inches deep. or you can always search for one of those sub boxes that fit in the rear panel where that storage bin is

Thanks for the info it helps a lot. I'm getting rid of the subs because I have a baby coming in about a month and the wife doesn't want the subs "pounding her little ears" as she says.

I had a big bandpass box but due to cargo space issues I downsized to a single sub in a truck box pushed up against the back seat. I don't think this is a good setup for a baby in a seat in back.

How does the Infinity basslink work? which seat will it fit under? will it be any better for the baby?

I have a Eclipse EA2000 2-channel amp. can I connect it to the speakers in my door?

I would say as long as the music is at a low level you shouldnt have any problems with the baby. Plus its not like you will be driving around with a newborn, windows down, and lil john cranked to 11:D

If it is too loud put a switch in line with the turn on lead, flip the switch and the sub dissapears, if you do that you could just keep the sub you have:biggrin2:
If you decide to go with a switch let me know, I'll make a walkthrough.
 
I have a limited with motorized seats so there is no room for a basslink under either front seat, so I guess that's out.

I like the idea of a switch for the sub though. Can you give me more info? I did my own amp install so I know where my wires are and I am familiar with splicing. If you can let me know which wire and what kind of switch I need, I may just do that and keep the setup I have.

I have a limited too so I feel your pain... I did manage to fit an amp under the drivers seat though:D

I will take some pictures of what I did and get back to you in a few.
 
Okay here is the pictures and parts you need.

This is the switch I used, you could use anything you wanted, I picked this one because it was small and easy. In my picture the flippy part of the switch was missing, I snapped it off with my knee on accident :bash: I upgraded to this switch and havn't had any problems:D

Radio Shack P/N 275-624


I also added an LED that turns on when the amp is on. It isn't really needed because it is pretty obvious when the subs are on but I added it anyway. There is a red or green LED.

Green Radio Shack PN 276-271

Red Radio Shack PN 276-270

If you don't add an LED just cut your remote turn on lead (the small single wire that comes from the head unit, it's probably blue) and connect the side coming from the head unit to lead A on the switch, connect the other to side B. The best way to connect the would be to solder but you could use crimp connectors or worst case just wrap the wires around the leads.

If you want the LED connect the lead coming from the head unit to Pin A on the switch. Connect the red lead from the LED and the other half of the Amp turn on lead together to pin B. Connect the black lead of the LED to Ground.

As for the holes they are 1/4 for the switch and 5mm for the LED I think I used 1/4 for both...

Any of the speakers that are mention here are great. I was in the same situation and had to take my subs out. I still wanted some of the low frequencies so i went and bought a bazooka bass tube model el-10. It is power by an alpine pdx-5, focal components in the front and polyglass focal in the rear. Very happy with the sound does not rattle my truck and the bass is solid but not overwhelming that it would bother your child.
 
I managed to fit 6 1/2 inch JBLs in the back doors of my '98 after removing the standard speaker brackets. 6X9 would definitely need some metal trimming.

How much trouble was it to modify the back doors to accept 6 1/2 speakers?

I may just want to do that.

I have Rockford Fosgates in the Front and Infinity 4 ways in the rear... and then a sub also...

Why turn the music down! its good for the kids... dont worry about it. They dont need to hear all the junk coming out of the other kids mouths anyways! ;):


ok, that was a lame joke, go with the switch idea, or just keep the volume down when the kid is in the car. I have had a 12" sub in my car since long before my 3 yr old was born and still do! no need to change your life completely. You are still YOU! and you like the sub, so turn it down a bit for your kid to have good hearing and rock it up loud when theres no kid in the car! No need for you to sacrifice something like that!
 
I have 6.5" inn the rear doors too....it was simple, although theyre a little too deep, as now the rear windows don't go all the way down
 
I'm running 6.5"s in the rear too, as for the window issue, I made a spacer out of MDF tho bring the magnet farther away from the window, there is still plenty of space between the door panel and the woofer too.
 
dynamat the doors and run some focal k2p , 165k2p in the front and the rear run 130k2p, u wont need a sub, but u need atleast 100watts of power minimum to power them, set it up nice and tune it well, and u wont need a sub.
