Speedometer calibration questions - again.

I think your on the correct path. It's the last 2 numbers.

You can see the 5 speed vs auto doesn't Matter. As my 5 speed 97 is red. Brown label are the limited [ possibly] and the sports just use sr5 red label ones.

I an wondering if the last number is the revision level??

We figure it out...

More fuel on the fire... my 1999 SR5 V6 2WD auto 15" wheel:

The 2WD models don't change modes when in 4WD (ABS response changed/disabled or something in 4WD, I think?)

That agrees with my findings.

But.....what color is the label? I'm partially color blind. I thought all the 89540-3509x modules that I saw had purple labels. Is the label on yours purple or green? Or??

I usually have my wife validate colors for me, but she's 600 miles away at our son's house.

OK....I went back and looked at the photos I found of 89540-3509x modules and they are indeed green. I updated my earlier post. Thanks for that!

More Observations

I made a trip to the salvage yard today to pick up a latch for the 4Runner lift gate and a few other items. While I was there, I took the opportunity to check the ABS modules in the three 3rd gen 4Runners that were in the yard. All three agreed with my previous observations in post #40. I took a couple photos.

I also realized the 4 character alpa/numeric code on the label or on the wire socket is actually a date code. This code agrees with the model year of the 4Runner. The first character is the year. The second character (letter) is the month. The last two digits are the day of the month.

Maybe the red and brown are the 4x4 with 16 inch wheels and the blue and green are the 15 inch wheels?? [ just theorizing]

Or green the 4×2.

Toyota loves date codes and I noticed that number moved from the sticker to wire connector as well.

Any 2wd Abs units out there in both the 15 or 16 wheels .

Thanks for the feedback on the yellow box. I did some reading on the Yellow Box website. Apparently, they've been in business for 20+ years and their units have a 10 year warranty. I had not heard of them until I joined this site. Is it installed between the ABS module and the speedometer?

Yes…and make sure you do the input on the box coming from the abs module and the output going to the speedo. For some reason I had these swapped on the first attempt at installing.

You are correct the green module was on a 2WD with 15" wheels.

The orange modules was on a 2WD with 16" wheels.

I updated the photos of the green and orange modules to show they are from a 2WD.

I have updated post #40 with all photos and applications of the part numbers/label colors. Re-reading it should answer your questions.

Limited 4x4 vs sr5 4x4 cluster

Hello i have a 99 4runner sr5 4x4 but i hate the 4x4 small signal when engaging. My buddy have a 99 4x4 limited with a nice 4x4 lights in the cluster. I was wondering can i swap the cluster of. 99 sr5 with a 99 limited?? They have the same pins same color connectors.Will it work on my sr5? I just want the better 4x4 light on the center of the speedometer. Thanks for your help.

It works!

The 89540-3511 ABS module was delivered yesterday. I installed it in my son-in-law's 4Runner this morning. I am happy to report the 89540-3511 has corrected the speedometer reading. At 70 MPH it is dead on with the GPS.

I also checked the ABS functionality with the new module. I simulated 2 panic stops from 60 MPH and it worked flawlessly.

If you are upgrading from 225/75/15 tires to 265/70/16 tires I believe this is a less expensive alternative to a Yellow Box or Dakota Digital SGI-100BT. I paid less than $32 shipped for the module I purchased on eBay.

I have updated post #40 with the information needed to determine which ABS module is needed to correct your speedometer.

NOTE: This will only correct your speedometer when upgrading to the optional factory size 265/70/16 (30.6') tire.

That's perfect as I have 2 spare r16 abs modules. So in my case, it's a just swap the modules out and good to go for me. I expected this was the fix for this particular instance

Naturally, the larger diameter than the stock configuration diameters.
Will not work in this method.

A method to correction to solve the larger diameters would be using a sensor [ Tocuma] with different size teeth to correct the dignal going to the speedometer. [ this has to be calculated via diff ratio etc]

So I expect 3rd party module as the best solution for the larger diameters tires.
