We picked up an '04 SE V-6 yesterday and it doesn't come with the rear spoiler, however it has the hood scoop.

I'm going to be a mechanical engineer as my major so maybe i'll throw my weight. lol this may be boring so I'm sorry, in terms of racing you have three. you have the front splitter aiding steering and the rear spoiler and rear diffuser. the spoiler at can aid in turns by keeping the rear in check or adjust it for high speed and the same goes for the diffuser but the diffuser is not adjustable. in terms of fuel economy aerodynamics helps greatly. a smooth cut in the air means less resistance for the engine to fight when cruising, accelerating, etc. now on a SUV like the 4runner 4th gen I can mostly bet its there for looks (I want one on mine) but now its adding or reducing the aero drag on the SUV. I haven't seen any wind tunnel tests on a 4runner so I am not sure. plus with the addition of the roof rack it add more drag i think. to me it almost seems like a pick up bed with no bed cover. I'm sure someone here knows more about the spoiler and correct me if I am wrong. I wonder if there were mpg tests with and with out the spoiler? :bigok:

Has anyone else noticed that with the high bump spoiler that you can't put certain things on the roof racks without it hitting/resting on the spoiler? Even a ladder will be barely above the top of the spoiler and if you go over any bumps they'll touch. I do like how it keeps my rear window clean (rarely if ever use the wiper) but I don't like that it gets in the way of using the roof rack.

I specifically looked for a 'runner without the spoiler for that reason. I ski a ton, and if I had gotten the spoiler I wouldn't be able to put my skis on the ski rack. as it is now, I can open the hatch with my skis on the rack and I get about a MM of clearance with the hatch open between the top of the hatch and the ski tips.

Both are definitely for looks. I have both the scoop and the spoiler, I really do like it with than without. I also feel it looks naked without the spoiler.

What is weird is that Leftyguns21 has a '08 UrbanRunner and it does not have the hump on the spoiler, so I don't know why some have the hump and some don't.
I haven't owned a 4Runner with the non-hump spoiler, so I can only speak from my own experience owning the hump spoiler. I can say with certainty, that the rear spoiler significantly decreases the amount of splash back on the rear window. I owned a Grand Cherokee with no spoiler and that rear window was next to impossible to see out of when driving in crappy conditions. I don't believe it serves any function beyond keeping the rear window clear while driving in adverse conditions. It also helps prevent snow from building up on the rear window while parked. Just my $0.02, but that has been my experience.

then every 06-07 around here has aftermarket spoilers because they are all the "no-hump" spoiler. i started noticing the humped spoiler when the local dealership started getting 08's on the lot.
for every 06-09 4Runner i see here, maybe 1/10 have the hump.
i for one, am very glad South East Region Toyota's gave 06-07ish 4runners the no hump spoiler. i think the humped spoiler looks horrible. i have no way to comment on the difference between the two as far as keeping the window clean, but i can say that i dont usually notice the window becoming excessively dirty, but if it does i just use the rear windshield wiper. thats why it's there...

Someone mentioned getting the "whub-whub" acoustic vibration when driving with the rear window open at highway speeds. I've only tried it once at various speeds, it was dead silent, no fumes, my dog just sat staring at the people behind me. I wonder if the spoiler makes it quiet? I have the non-hump.
