Yeah, I've had similar experiences in Dallas. Fortunately, I live along the Gulf Coast where people, for the most part, are pretty salt of the Earth.

What I've discovered, both with bikes and trucks, is that very often people who had a lot of mods are actually not enthusiasts. I've tired to strike up conversations with a lot of different people over the years about their modded vehicles which are similar to my own, and most people are polite but uninterested. Only a few have actually engaged in conversations, seemed interested, and known what the **** they were talking about. Conversely, I've had a lot of people who are driving common cars (unmodded Hyundais, for example) strike up complimentary conversations with me at gas stops and during random roadside encounters.

you can get those rainbow halos and sell me your HID's, at least your lights looked like HID's when I looked at them driving away.

I'm not sure I'm ready to commit to the Rainbow Brite lighting mod just yet.
Yup, I'm running XD HID's. That was the first upgrade I made, along with some Morimoto LED fogs.

What are the odds?
This past week, I was in Big Bend National Park, camping with my children. We made a side trip to the super small and SUPER REMOTE town of Terlingua. We stopped at a little dive for lunch when I saw this modded 5th gen:
About 45 minutes later, when we were done eating, I saw this 5th gen with super-cool trailer, pull up for gas:
I went up to the guy and complimented him on his 5th gen, and he looked at me like like I was speaking Portugese. I then told him that I liked his Runner and he finally understood that I was complimenting him. I asked him if he was a T4r.org member, and then he looked irritated. His response: "Yes, but I'm never on there". I knew at that moment, that I was only annoying this guy. Oh well.
Unfortunately, I've had this happen too many times with 4Runner owners. Just last weekend I was in Joshua Tree and saw someone with a modded 5th gen and as I approached him (with my lifted 5th gen behind me) you would have thought I had the plague. Even my buddy said, that guys body language said: I don't want to talk to you. I've given up trying to wave to others with modded runners - it's like they're all self-conscious. When I had a Jeep, other Jeep owners were way more receptive to a wave, smile or BS'ing about their rigs.

I honestly think the majority of those people are poseurs who throw money at the truck for appearances only, and they don't want to get "found out" by getting roped into conversation with someone who might discover them.
You had the Alpha dog off road scent, and they wanted no part of it.

I've seen him in Cypress too. Quite a few modded 4runners in Cypress but from what I can tell only a couple are actually on the forums or FB groups.

Reading through this discussion on this topic. I've experienced the same thing over and over. With only 2 exceptions people are like, "oh... yeah cool bro." On the other hand, when you do meet an enthusiast it's pretty awesome. Ended up talking for over an hour with this guy at a body shop in Tomball, tx who has a sweet 5th gen. I've also seen a lot of overland rigs in general do the whole crane-your-neck-around-to-get-a-better-look-but-i'm-going-to-pretend-I-didn't-see-you-wave thing...

I'll tell you exactly how it's done, since this area (coastal norCal) is land of the copious cash money (from dope growing) and the bro (grow) dozer. They drive their brand new, paid-in-cash truck to a local shop; wave $15k at the mechanic, and drive out a week later with a full build; having no idea what they've paid for or how to use any of it.
