Sprint Booster

Took my truck on a 3 hour road trip. Sprint booster def makes driving a bit more fun now.
I have to get used to it a bit because I know find myself going 85-90 mph on the highway which will get me a ticket sooner than later. Loving it though.

I usually end up turning mine off on the interstate because of that and it wants to downshift when I don't need it to. Find it making the throttle to sensitive then but for city driving it is great. Which I drive probably 85% city so I rarely turn it off.

I hate to say this, but issues seem to be operator error.
Everyone that has installed the SB here has not had any issues IIRC, only you.

Try it once more....

Did you reset the ECU by removing the NEG cable for 4 hours, then perform the install?

Once you have it set to desired setting, stop engine, remove keys & place on seat, unplug cable...easy peezy.

Try that, it will perform as intended.

While I have been known to make mistakes, in this case I think it's a faulty part.

I tried for the 3rd and last time to get it going tonight.

Followed the instructions exactly.

Turned key on, got the green light. Started truck and got the CEL + TRAC errors.

Poked around a bit more and realized that the sprint-booster connector that connects to the factory harness (not the pedal) wasn't fully seated. And, I was unable to seat it no matter what contortions I tried. It was at least 1/8" from seating, so I don't think the contacts were making much if any connection. That would explain things, I'd think.

Net: I'm putting this down to some manufacturing defect/variation in the connector not allowing it to mate completely with the factory harness.

Might be a 1-off. Don't know. Calling for a return auth tomorrow (crossing fingers). I'll have to flex my ankle and be my own sprint booster.

And, I've found myself using the transmission to downshift proactively when I want a bit more power.

Cheers. YMMV. Etc.

Once more, as I am trying to help you.....and you never answered or expressed you did this!
If you did not, the ECU is holding the codes!

Yes I did. Or I wouldn't have tried it one more time. You know, try the same thing twice and expect different results :)

Thank you for your help.

It's pretty clear (to me) after looking at it more closely that I'm simply not getting a solid connection between the booster and the factory harness. The "pins" on the booster harness aren't seating in the female receptacles in the factory connector. I should have seen this the first time through. After a closer look something is binding up and preventing the pieces from mating effectively. There's a little "window" in the factory connector and you can see that the sprint booster "flange" has 1/8"-1/4" to go before fully seating.

I was yarfing on it with enough force that I started worrying about damaging the factory piece and stopped. I don't want to flatbed my 4runner to the dealer for a harness replacement.

I've modified in one way or another every one of my last 30 cars. This isn't new territory to me, fwiw. Surprisingly stumped by such a simple part.

Thanks again, I really appreciate the help.

UPDATE: I just talked with MiniMania (distributor). I'm returning it. They said they had a batch of them with problematic connectors that "could be filed down to make them fit". I told them I didn't want to experiment. Friendly, helpful customer support.

Just installed mine today. Opened the door, put the keys on the other side of the garage, set a timer for five minutes, couple of clicks and was driving down the road another 5 minutes later. Truck feels great. I love it on red, but it'll get me a ticket, green is the way to go.

I am sold and want to get one... but just curious on the legitimate online vendor of these.
Where is everyone getting them from?
https://www.sprintboostersales.com/ gave me a paypal vendor email error when I tried to check out...

You can learn a lot about a vendor in terms of how they deal with returns. MiniMania took really good care of me when returning my defective Booster. Huge props to them as a vendor.

I'm hoping they flushed the bad batch of connectors out of the system.

While my truck was in the shop, I had a 2016 Grand Cherokee. This was the poverty spec rental version with the v6. I never felt like my 4Runner was "slow", but damn did it feel sluggish compared to the Jeep. That car felt like a rocket ship due to it's throttle mapping. I'm sold on the spirit booster at this point. I'll just wait for a sale on the v3.

I haven't seen them go "on sale" until a new version come out....
you may be waiting a while.......

I am not usually a "snake-oil" person.

But I had the chance to borrow one of these.

I bought one after borrowing.

I know it is all a perception thing, but it really makes it feel "better".

I have it in RED in town. I've discovered that at speed, RED is a little much on the highway - it downshifts a little too quickly for my taste, so I switch it into green mode.

Worth the $$? Maybe. But like I said, I borrowed one, then ended up buying one.

So for me, yes. I feel like a bozo admitting that the perception of more power brainwashed me into spending the $$ to remain brainwashed.

Got mine and installed it. Ran it up through the steering wheel...
love mine.

Wow I didn't know something like this existed until today. I'm still driving my IS350 since it's still summerish here in Utah, but I won't stop thinking about this mod until I install it. I've only driven the 4Runner for less than 100 miles so I'm not really sure what is normal, but it does feel sluggish for sure.
