No, you don't have to install the controller. cbaty08 If you don't, the unit is pre-set to the higher setting automatically. Now, there are benefits to have the controller hooked up. They are the valet and pedal lock features. Valet mode lets you set a certain rpm, say 3,500 and the truck will not go over that RPM. Saves people from joy riding that may have you car when it's at the shop, etc. Pedal lock lets you lock out the gas pedal. Say someone got your keys or tried to steal the truck. If they get it started, the pedal is fully disabled and they can't go anywhere! I had a customer who was pilot with a 16 yr old daughter... Everytime he went out of town, she would find the keys (after he hid them) and take the truck out with her friends. This happened multiple times. He bought the booster so this couldn't happen anymore. That's not really the reason to buy one, but it definitely gives much more security. I use it if I'm in a hotel or amd parked at an airport for peace of mind.

Again, you don't have to plug it in if you don't want to. You can set it and forget it, and leave it in the glove box if you ever want to adjust later, but once you set it, you don't really need to change.
