Squealing Brakes started today, let's go Tundra Upgrade.

Well, by front brakes started the obnoxious squealing today, and seeing that I have a little shimmy when hard on the brakes, I figured I'd go ahead and replace the rotors while I'm in there. Since I'm replacing the rotors, might as well go bigger and do the Tundra upgrade.


I'm hoping to keep this economical as being a full-time student is busting my checkbook hardcore right now.

So here are my questions before getting started on the purchases:

1) Where and what brand of Calipers should I go with (I have Napa, Pep-Boys, Auto Zone, and Oreilly's here locally)?

2) What brand rotors?

3) Type and brand of pad recommendations.

4) Obviously need to get the factory shims from Toyota. I hate squeaking.

5) What can I assume to total cost to be? I have to brace myself, then talk my wife into why this is a better alternative than just replacing the pads and ridding the squeak. If I come prepared, it's more likely to be a better outcome. Possibly.:noidea:




I'm aware that this has most likely been run through ad nauseam, but I'm looking for updated info and most threads I've seen on the mod are really only giving a lot of information in posts from a solid 6 or 7 years ago. Not to contemporary in regards to pricing and availability!

Well, I really need to get this done and taken care of prior to things getting louder and the wife getting more annoyed (who am I kidding, I'm using her as a scapegoat. The sound of screeching brakes drives me bonkers).

I went ahead and ordered the full Power Stop brake kit with calipers, pads, and drilled/slotted rotors from Summit Racing. I'm not all that jazzed about red powder-coated calipers, nor am I jacked up about the chamfered pads or the ricey drilled and slotted rotors. However, the entire package was $387 shipped, with an $80 core return credit. So, $307 seems difficult to beat for everything.

With brakes, I'm a bit weary of a brand I've never heard of, but there are thousands of online reviews of the company and they have an average of 4.7 out of 5 rating, so that seems pretty solid. Plus, I checked on a Nissan Titan forum where a few guys had done the complete package, and they had nothing but rave reviews. I'm hoping to offer up the same type of review on here in about a week or two.

If you scrub around the threads I have heard of guys doing it as cheap as under 200, and I am not sure where. Someone said theres a kit you can get with everything for around 300.

You might want to look into Raybestos Tundra brake calipers on Amazon. It is the cheapest and doesn't require any core exchange! I running them on my 4Runner and so far no issues and works great.

As far as rotors go, I use Centric. Great price and does its job. The quality looks pretty good as well.

I did mine for $227. I bought calipers from the junkyard and rebuilt and painted them for $35. Then I bought rotors and pads from Amazon for $120 shipped.

You'll be fine with the Powerstop stuff. If it's just the looks you're worried about, buy some junkyard calipers and paint them yourself like I did...they have like 10 colors.

I bought the same kit and not disappointed at all. Amazon had them for 307 with no core charge. I have about 500 miles on them and no issues at all. Which rims do you have? I had to grind down my stockers to get it to fit. Also I recommend bedding your brakes once you get them installed. While I had everything taken apart, I went ahead and installed SS braided brake lines because one of my old ones was cracking. I love the feeling now when I brake. They feel solid, the stock brakes felt like my front end was going to fall apart when I applied the brakes, even with new rotor and pads.

Pretty straight forward install and over time you'll appreciate them more and more.

I priced from Napa, Oreillys, and Advance. Napa was least expensive at $280. I looked at the local junk yards but couldn't find the calipers or rotors. Probably going to go with the Napa parts unless a Tundra or Sequoia show up in one of the u pull it places this week.

$320 Duralast parts with lifetime warranties. I've had this setup for 3yrs now and it's still one of my favorite mods. It' make stopping this big monster seem effortless. I've jammed on these brakes for emergency stops a few times and they get ridden pretty well up in the mountains. No issues at all, not even the slightest shake during quick braking.
