SR5 Air Conditioning

Just to reinforce the OP's issue: my SR5 A/C absolutely sucks. Even when I was living in VA I often had to have the air conditioning on high to be comfortable. Now that I'm living in AZ, and it was over 100* before we even hit June I'm definitely feeling the lack of cooling. I'm also beginning to experience issues with my blower fan in that it will make a lot of noise even at low settings. Going to troubleshoot it when I get back from a work trip in a couple of weeks.

yea i've noticed that it could be a little stronger too.. the first few notches on the fan control is useless..

Have your dealer (if still under warranty) check the A/C system. You may be down on refrigerant a few ounces.

Last summer (first summer owning it) the T4R didn't feel cold like I thougth it should be. The dealer did a dye check and it was fine...no leaks. Turns out it wasn't full of refrigerant from the factory.

After the top off, the A/C was much cooler. What helped the most is getting the windows tinted. I can run mine at 2/3 blower speed on a 106* day and it stays nice and cool inside.

Edit: The EPA has mandated multiple AC changes, with another coming in the next year I believe and for the most part it's similar to water based paints being used. Better for the environment but with compromises.

I'm not up to speed on the HFC-134a replacement, but I think HFO-1234yf seems to be the front runner. However, Mercedes performed a crash test last year and found the refrigerant caught fire when exposed to the exhaust manifolds. They changed their vehicles back to HFC-134a for the time being. [Link] In the EU, HFC-134a will be banned for use in new vehicles by 2017. [Link]

GM is still switching over to HFO-1234yf [Link]

I looked at an SAE paper comparing HFO-1234yf and HFC-134a. It concluded that HFO-1234yf was superior in performance and efficiency than HFC-134a when used as a direct drop in for a vehicle designed for HFC-134a. It's only one data point, but it's more than nothing.

Tinting all your windows will make the biggest difference. Almost been 100 here the last couple days and it feels fine. 15% front and 30% everywhere else, nothing on the windshield.

Agree with the op, my base model '03 Yukon that I traded in with 200K on it had superior A/C (even had rear vents). That thing would chase you out of the vehicle it would get so cold. Love my 4Runner, but am finding several little "discrepancies" I would love to see a little different on it. New vehicles I guess.

I live in Las Vegas and the A/C is fine. It hit a warm 110 on saturday.

In Georgia (humid), and right now in Grand Junction (103 this week), I have never had to run it on high for more than a couple minutes to cool off the interior.

2013 SR5, the AC blows cold. It will freeze you out after a few minutes even in the 100+ deg Texas August days. Got windows tinted as dark as legal by the dealer when we bought it (sorry, I don't know what those numbers are).

Sr5 a/c

My SR 5 5th gen works just fine and it keeps me just as comfortable as my new Lexus LS460AWD. I presently live in Southern Delaware where temps this time of year are usually in the 80's with high humidity. My SR5 also has Black Leather interior so it is pretty warm inside after sitting in the sun but the A/C gets it cool quickly.

My complaint is it's too strong. Even on it's lowest setting it's too cold when the outside temps are in the 70's-80's. Even if I turn all vents away from me, I'm constantly turning the A/C on and off. I really don't want to run the heater at the same time. JMHO

Try adjusting the thermostat - you don't have to run it at max cold setting all the time. Twist the knob a little bit...

I might agree... Just posted this in the other thread.

On the hottest days, I don't think I've had the temp set below 75F/24C for more than 10 minutes to cool the vehicle down. I'm usually at 24-24.5C (75-76F).

No complaints here about it not being old enough.
